And the moment comes to face the truth. I ask you to post personal music recordings, so I have to show the same courage myself.

1.Grandchildren Turkenburg - First Concert (Vinkeveen, 1972)

Where did I leave you? Oh Yes, so I was mad about music and The Youth Choir impressed me. On rainy sunday afternoons my father used to teach me right hand melodies on our old piano. When at school we were asked to join Master Hans' recorder class (mister Hans was the youth Choir flute-player), I not surprisingly immediately raised my arm. After a few months I played well enough to play at my grandparents wedding anniversary with my cousins Erna (recorder, same class) and Marga (harpsichord) The songs came from "my first recorder book" (James Arden) en my had written a harpsichord accompaniment for Marga. One rehearsel in Amstelveen and one in Vinkeveen and boy, were we ready!

We skip a few chapters because I don't have any music recordings until 1979
I am 15 yeras old. Hans Meester has choosen me as his succesor in the choir, I borrowed his old flute for one year, to figure out the transition from recorder to flute myself, then I hardly ever touched it and one evening he suddenly turned up to listen how things were working out. I staggered through the scale of C major. "Very good", Hans said, "next saturday you'll be joining me in mass, I will be leaving Vinkeveen soon and you will take over, here are your scores." How to teach somebody to play a musical instrument in no-time, lesson one. In that period several people support my musical development: my farther, my uncle the tuba teacher and members of the youth choir band. My favorites in music: Electric Light Orchestra, Boudewijn de Groot, The Beatles, Flairck, Focus and the radio-programs: Superclean Dream Machine, Folk live, Het Stenen Tijdperk (stone age time), Poster, Ferry Maat's Soulshow, De Adje Bouman Top Tien, De Dikvoormekaar show and several local pirat stations.

2. Jan en Emiel reconstrueren: "Friend of mine" en "Peace"

In the year after Hans Meester moved to Dronten, a lot of members and almost the entire band left as well, mainly because of disagreements with the priest. The drummer, Emiel who was one year older than me and I were the only band members left. Emiel had studied the guitar for a few months and since this instrument was more needed now, he made a rapid switch. The two of us would accompany the smaller choir for about two years, every other week in church mass. Again: how to learn an instrument in no-time.... In search for instrumentals during communion and before the mass I analysed tunes I recorded from radio into melody and chords. Emiel would adapt the guitar chords to make it "more interesting" and came up with suitable rhythms when I hummed "something like this..."
3. Music for an unfinished film (main theme)

4. Music for an unfinished film (variations on main / fill in music)

5. Music for an unfinished film (sad scene)

6. Music for an unfinished film (exciting scene)

7. Music for an unfinished film (Finale)

This music I composed to a film we had to make for school. The shots for the films had been taken, bur we never got the chance to edit it. So it was never shown in public. Maybe the music can trigger your imagination. Emiel and I recorded it in church after a choir rehearsel. We arranged melody and chords like we were used to do, but track 4 and 6 were born at the spot, while experimenting with "moods" One year later I published the music of the main title in a special art edition of the school's newspaper.

Bonustracks added july 31 2004:

8. De Vlieger (The kite)
My first complete musical composition ever. Recorded live in church on a sunday morning.

9. Krantenkoppen (Headlines)
Adaptation of the film music theme on track 3-7, for 4 flutes. I made that in my first year at the music academy. Flute-players: José Derksen, Daria Rhöse, Mirjam Slats, Jan Turkenburg
