Faith (1) No, we're not going to the zoo to watch and laugh at the monkeys. I know some religious recordings like those on 365days make it very hard to keep a straight face by. But that kind of fun is not my intention. Okay, in spite of my Roman Catholic youth I don't believe, but I'm not a fundamental atheist, more a romantic agnost who secretly hopes that life does have a meaning after all, even though he knows better. This new series is all about amateur musicians and composers who make music with all of their hearts regardless the style, regardless the result. These are my heroes and I've told you before that I was very young when I decided I wanted to be one of them. So I'm joining them here too. CREDO
What do you believe in exactly? A few confessions: 1. Youth Church Haarlem - Ik geloof (I believe) To me this is typical dutch roman catholic in the seventies: a prayer with live background music to create a romantic or (in this case) relaxed mood. |
2. Big I.J.E. Choir Rotterdam The only ones on this page with professional support (tag) "We keep believing that amongst millions the Lord of Creation has a plan for us." |
3. Musical Group "Kleine Kracht" (small power/strength): Ik wil graag verhaal vertellen. I want to tell/proclame you 'story I don't know the date. The recording sounds much older than the label of the LP appears to be: 1960? |
4. Vocal Group "NEHIMA" from Zwolle, conducted by Claudy Dekker - Heer Jezus, Ik geloof wat u zegt. Lord Jesus, I believe what you say |
ONZE VADER (OUR FATHER) To focus on music mainly, I've chosen 10 different compositions based on the same prayer: the most wellknown one 5. Pope John Paul The Second - Pater Noster First of all the traditional catholic melody, sung by the pope himself with a Polish choir, during the vist to his birthland. You can hear even he feels the need to make variations on that old tune. |
6. Thomas Choir Zwolle - Onze Vader (Igor Strawinsky) Strawinsky tried to maintain the recitative character of the old church music. Recorded 1981 |
7. Catholic Youth Choir Vinkeveen (rehearsel 1983) - Onze Vader (I don't know how to love him) A lot of youth choirs in Holland try to fit popular melodies and given religious texts tocether. This is one of the first times our choir sinned like that. |
8. Youth Choir Oddysee Hoofddorp - Our Father (1981) If you're lucky a dutch popgroup writes an Our Father-like hit, you can use. This one was by "Unit Gloria". |
9. Reunion Catholic Youth Choir Vinkeveen 1985 - Onze Vader (Maak alles nieuw) Our Father (Make everything anew) Wellknown dutch composers, like Joop Stokkermans write church music commercially. The two pics were taken during recording this track! |
10. Catholic Youth Choir Raalte - Onze Vader (Hans Groen ) But it's much more fun to write your own Our Father. Hans Groen (upper right) wrote a complete symfonic rock mass. Recorded March 7 and 8 1988 |
11. Jongerenkoor Verrijzenis Parochie Zwolle - Onze Vader The choir from the church in my current, late seventies. Leadsinger and conductor Cor Otten still conducts and the choir's name is now "Vocalis" They sing in the other churches as well now. |
12. "The Reflections" from Ommen - Vater Unser It doesn't matter; dutch, english, german: everybody knows what you're singing. |
13. The New Creations - Our Father Pity those scratches. Even after Physical and digital clean up they remain. But this rendition belongs here too. From the LP "Bijbels voor China" from each sold copy 2,5 guilders (about a dollar) went to translating and distributing bibles in China No, one doesn't have to agree with that, but we were only interested in the music, remember? So what is she singing there? Our Father who .....? in heaven. Please help this dutch webmaster. And..... is this pronounciation of "Holy" common elsewhere? It leaves me puzzled... |

14. The Stepping Stone Visit, Featuring Ben Turkenburg & Astrid Steenbrink - Onze Vader An historical recording: on 4 december 1988 I'm on foreign radio for the first time in my life! And with my own work too! Just like Hans Groen I had written a church mass: for Christmas, for the Youth Choir in Vinkeveen in 1983. 5 years later I found myself roaming Belgium with a group calle |
