Le Grand Tour
In the 17th and 18th century the "grand tour" was a journey that a young man made to complete his education. He would visit al the important European cities to experience their rich culture himself. Once I read a well documented 'grand tour' by Jan Alenszoon in 1723. Every day he wrote down what he had seen, who he had met and especially which music he had heard!
In 1987 that's what I had in mind too: Paris, Barcelona, Rome, Venice! And although I never reached those places, I had a great time. I didn't write anything down. I didn't take one single picture, but I had my sony tcs-470 with me and every day I recorded my descriptions of what I had seen, I recorded the voices of the people that I met and the music that some of them made! Most of the cassettes I would send immediately to my friend Eugène in Haarlem. On a few occasions I even edited the sounds at the spot like a radio reporter, when somebody let me use his or her walkman. Almost half of the tapes where lost or erased over the years but here are a few moments for those of you who stay at home this summer: close your eyes and try to see the pictures.
