Albert Dam is one of the music teachers at location Meander of the Agnieten college, a fusion of seven separate secundary school communities, with all the types of dutch secundary schools represented. "Het Meander" focusses highly on art in general and music in particular.
Albert Dam is één van de muziekleraren van locatie Meander van het Agnieten college, een fusie van zeven scholengemeenschappen, die met elkaar nagenoeg alle nederlandse typen voortgezet onderwijs vertegenwoordigen.

Een terugblik....
Het lijkt nog zo kort geleden, de aarzelende start van wat zou uitgroeien tot de MEANDER BIGBAND in haar huidige vorm. In het schooljaar '96-'97 werd de muziektheaterproductie "Contrasten", onder regie van Deirdre Swen, opgevoerd. Ik had als student schoolmuziek, in het kader van een stage-project de muzikale leiding (en als ik me niet vergis heeft ene Jan T. ook nog korte tijd aan het vocale deel meegewerkt). Vrij kort heb ik gevraagd of ik eens mocht proberen een echte bigband op te richten. Daarvoor had ik twee redenen: ik wilde een afstudeerscriptie schrijven over schoolorkesten in Nederland (en dus aan den lijve ervaren wat dat inhield) én ik had een groot voorbeeld in Anne Oosterhaven, dirigent van de Bogerman Bigband uit Sneek.

Looking back
It seems only yesterday, the hesitating start of what would become the MEANDER BIG BAND in it's present form.
In schoolseason 96-97 the musical theatre production "Contrasts", directed by Deidre Swen. Directing the musical aspect of the production was part of my study school music at the music academy in Zwolle (If I'm not mistaken a certain Jan T. did some work for the musical part too...). Shortly after, I asked if I could start a real bigband on this school. I had two reasons to do so: I wanted to finish my study with a special paper on school bands and school orchestras (and therefore I had to experience what that was all about.) and I had a great role model in Anne Oosterhaven, conductor of the Bogerman Bigband from Sneek

Het is hard werken geweest in het begin: veel oud-leerlingen worden misschien nog wel eens zwetend wakker als ze terugdenken aan de manier waarop ze werden gecontroleerd en werden gestimuleerd (of "gedwongen") om op de repetities aanwezig te zijn. Dat harde werken heeft veel opgeleverd: de band groeit en bloeit en heeft navolging gekregen in de vorm van het MEANDER POPKOOR, , MEANDER VOCAAL (leerlingen met muziek als examenvak) en het MEANDER STRIJKENSEMBLE.

It has been a lot of hard work. Maybe cold sweat still comes over former Meander students when they think back of the way they were kept under control and were stimulated (read: "forced")to attent to rehearsels. Through this hard work however we did accomplish a lot: the band is flourishing and served as a model for the MEANDER POP CHOIR, MEANDER VOCAL (for students who graduate on music.) and the MEANDER STRING ENSEMBLE.

Meander Vocaal & Jeugdsymfonieorkest “de Vuurvogel“

Het lijkt misschien veel van het goede, maar doordat Martien Hovestad en ik 80% van de reguliere muzieklessen besteden aan musiceren (vocaal en instrumentaal), is dit alles een logisch vervolg. Sterker, inmiddels heb ik ook een regionaal jeugdsymfonieorkest: JSO "de Vuurvogel" , waarin zowel leerlingen als niet-leerlingen hun partij meespelen.

It seems overdoing it a bit, but because Martien Hovestad and I spend 80% of normal music lessons on making music (vocally and instrumentally) this is the logic follow-up.
In fact, in the meantime I've managed to found a regional youth symfony orchestra De Vuurvogel (The Firebird) as well, of which not only Meander students but all young people from this region can become member.
