The Four Domains of Mindfulness

5/17/2007 - The Buddha's teaching on The Four Foundations of Mindfulness, which is outlined in Sutta Satipatthana, is of great significance. According to the text, it is 'the direct path to the attainment of purity, for the overcoming of sorrow and lamentation, for the end of pain and grief...for the realization of nibbana'. The Four Seals of Dharma

4/8/2007 - If you live up to The Four Seals, you can call yourself a buddhist! "Accepting the Four Seals marks the difference between a buddhist and a non-buddhist", the Dalai Lama has said on the Six Paramitas DVD. So apparently these Four Seals must be very important and they are. They are also called: the four characteristics of Buddhism. Study and try to understand them and you will get a much better insight in what Buddhism is really about.

Buddha as a book

11/26/2006 - One of the best documentaries I have ever seen is called Buddha as a book. "Thousands of monks and nuns are reciting around the Bodhi-tree where the historical Buddha reached enlightenment. We are at the annual World Peace Ceremony in Bodhgaya, India. The pilgrims arrive after harsh journeys from Bhutan, Nepal and Tibet. During the Festival Buddhist books are distributed, in 2004 an amount of 200.000. They are published and printed in Berkeley, California. From California the books are shipped to India and from there transported by trucks to Bodhgaya".

You can watch the film here

Tibet and the 14 Dalai Lama's exhibition [closed]

11/26/2006 - Who is the Dalai Lama? Who were the other 13 Dalai Lamas? What is the current situation in Tibet? The exhibition not only answers these and other questions, but also provides knowledge and inspiration to help answer the personal questions everyone asks. The theme throughout the museum is Tibet. Supervised programmes have been devised specially for children and young people. The exhibition at Rotterdam, The Netherlands, will be open until january 7, 2007.

Edit: Unfortunately, all info and pictures on the exhibition have now been removed.

Zoo Buddha

11/18/2006 - Visiting the Amsterdam Zoo, on my way to the butterfly garden, I ran across this great Buddha statue. Nothing special. I just experienced a moment of excitement, when I met the Buddha in such an unexpected way ;-). Click here for a big picture.

Tibetan refugees shot by Chinese soldiers

10/22/2006 - It is hard not to let arise feelings of anger and despair, watching the outrageous actions of Chinese soldiers against a group of Tibetan refugees. "At least ten young children from the group of Tibetans who came under fire near the Tibetan border with Nepal on September 30 have been taken into Chinese custody, according to new eyewitness accounts from climbers on Mount Cho Oyu at the time. About half an hour after one of the Tibetan group, a 25-year old nun, was shot dead by Chinese security forces, a group of children apparently traveling with her was marched in single file through advance base camp at Mount Cho Oyu, according to witnesses", ICT reports. Watch the coverage at YouTube

DVD: The Spirit of Nepal and Tibet

03/18/2006 - Today I found a 2003 DVD with impressions of the countries of Nepal and Tibet with 50 minutes of beautiful places, music and especially people. This DVD shows ordinary people and buddhist monks, busy with their daily activities. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find a region 1 version of the DVD, but you can buy the region 2 DVD here.

Buddhism: The Illustrated Guide

01/18/2006 - I recently came across Buddhism: The Illustrated Guide edited by Kevin Trainor. It's really a great book for beginners in Buddhism who would like to know more about this beautiful, spiritual movement and philosophy. Want to know more about the Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold Path, the life of Gautama Buddha, meditation and western Buddhism? Read Buddhism: The Illustrated Guide!
