Of
course he doesn't like the rectal medicine he gets (to avoid
too much slime in his throat while he's asleep)... but this
doesn't stop him from liking nurse 'grandpa' and from following
him around the hospital floor.
At
10.15 it's time for Jaimz & me to go to the OR. Jaimz
loves the wheeled bed & the rough ride the nurse gives
him and when I've got to put on special OR clothes &
a hat he even laughs at me ... and at the OR personnel he
later sees and who are wearing those same strange clothes.
He doesn't really like the stickers for the electrodes,
that get attached to his chest but there are so many interesting
things to see in the OR that he forgets about them soon.
The anesthetist comes to put Jaimz under and in less than
one second he's asleep and I unfortunately have to leave
him.
I had been told the whole procedure would take about 15
to 20 minutes, so after almost one hour I'm very afraid
something has gone wrong and I'm just about to start making
some trouble, when a nurse comes to get me.
When I see Jaimz I'm so happy I almost cry. Jaimz himself
cries a little cos he's confused and doesn't know what has
happened or where he is. As soon as he sees me it's OK though,
I hug & kiss him and on my lap he slowly wakes up.
A nurse tells me that they had to try 3 times before they
were able to get enough bone marrow and that, because Jaimz
has a bad nose cold, they woke Jaimz up more slowly than
normal... so that's why it took so much time.
When Jaimz is awake and the nurse is satisfied he is well,
they call nurse 'grandpa' who comes and takes us back to
Jaimz's daddy, who is very worried, cos no one told him
all's well with Jaimz...
As soon as Jaimz notices his dad, he stands up in his bed
and needs a big hug from dad as well. After a couple of
minutes Jaimz is allowed to drink some water and eat a few
biscuits and then he really wants to get out of bed and
play with nurse 'grandpa'...
We are so happy that he's so well and soooo proud of him!
The
Doctor who did the biopsy comes to sees us and explains
why he has 3 wounds. She says the 3rd biopsy did go well
and they were able to get all the bone marrow the need.
In 8 days she'll phone us with the results.
His
regular Doctor comes to see us at 12.30 for a little talk,
cos I e-mailed him I had a few questions. A mother from
the SDS e-mail group suggested sign language for babies.
Her son learned to talk very will because he first learned
sign language. We weren't too sure if this would work for
Jaimz as well, cos we were afraid that once Jaimz would
master those signs he would simply give up trying to speak
at all. His Dr. agrees with us. In fact, he tells us, nowadays
doctors believe that even for deaf people it might be better
to learn to talk before they learn sign language. So Jaimz's
Dr. and we agree on speech therapy and we hope that soon
he'll be talking our heads off.
I also inform about the DR's opinion on fishoil/Omega 3
fat and he tells me that there still is no medical proof
that it might do Jaimz any good.
After
that we say good-bye to nurse 'grandpa' (who gives Jaimz
a 'diploma for bravery') and it's time to finally go home,
where we arrive at 1.30 PM.
A lot of phone calls later (everybody's informing after
Jaimz) all 3 of us take it easy and watch Monsters Inc.
(again, must be the 30th time Jaimz wants to see this)...
Jaimz 'tells' us he doesn't have any pain, and is feeling
all right again. So it seems his day at the hospital was
harder on us than it was on him. Jaimz even had a lot of
fun most of the time! (And got some presents too...)
The
next day Jaimz complains a little about pain in both his
legs and he walks around with a stiff leg. He doesn't mention
his other wounds and after a couple of hours sleep, he 'tells'
me his leg doesn't hurt any longer. He still has a cold
though.
