Our spot
at the campsite |
Whereas
half Europe and therefore also Germany
comes in the traffic-jam we drive without any problem to the campsite. It is
still Mittagsruhe (afternoon pause) therefore we have enough time submit the
campsite to a first impression. What are notable for us are a lot of empty
spots and the presence of fixed campsites of which the occupants seemingly
only use the site during the winter. On the swim lake at the campsite the
children play on of the rafts which float in the water or pedal with their
small boat over the lake. The sanitary that is in two large buildings seems
to be clean and big enough for everyone. After we
have checked in we set up our folding car under viewing eyes of the already
present neighbours. Even taking a shower and afterwards we deliciously lay
down under the shed. The Evening we explore the restaurant and let us taste
the food and drinks very well. The lively Bayerische (Bavarian) music from
the tent beside the restaurant makes the sociability complete. Sunday becomes
a delicious rest day at the tent where the temperature rises to very summery
values. The lake brings us some times a delicious coolness where after we lay
down again on our towel or sit in the lazy chair. |
Now in the
Netherlands it can be warm but here it's also too crazy. Three days behind each
other we have 40 degrees and more. The new German record stands now on 40.8
degrees Celsius we therefore cool down very regularly in the lake.

Theodor
G. Sellner in its glass workshop |
On
Thursday we decide nevertheless to our first trip to explore the
surroundings. We leave from Hohenwarth
and go through Arrach and lam to Lohberg. In Lohberg since 1538 they melted
and blown glas. The current glass hut, the 17th in Lohberg is in an old
church from 1698. Here works glass sculptor Theodor
G. Sellner still daily in his glass art workshop for its unique
production. In the sale shop you find exclusively products of own produce,
you will not find import here. We take along a small glass-blown carafe. Next to the glass workshop you will find one
of the larger beer breweries of |
The Osser Brewery |
The Osser brewery which you can visit
after appointment on Tuesday or Wednesday. Near to the glass hut the "schwarzauer
Haus" (Bavarian farmhouse) stand in complete black where you can visit the
glass and art gallery.
In Lohberg
self you can visit also the animal zoo Bayerische Tierpark Loberg
with 400 animals. It concerns approximately 100 types who live here in Bavarian
wood.
|
We drive
further direction Brenner and if we bend of to the right we stand eye in eye
with the Grosse Arber. You look from here
direct on the Six-seater Gondola and the
green plains what in the winter the ski slopes used to be. We stop to enjoy
the beautiful view, take a photograph and the video camera takes everything spotlessly.
We decide for now to drive further and come back soon for an excursion with
the gondola. Something further stops we at the
Grosse Arbersee. This mountain lake become very visited by tourists.
Except for a restaurant and a shop you can do all kind of recreations at the
lake. Also several walks start or end here. |

After a
while we drive to Bodenmais. Here
stand Joska-Crystal the shop - and
factory halls. Joska-Crystal is the largest in the world of crystal trophies
and producer of the F.I.S. Worldcup at skiing. In the middle of the town of
Bodenmais you find a small shop. Even outside Bodenmais lies the largest
complex of Joska-Crystal. Here you can
amuse yourselves with the family the whole day. Beside a restaurant and (of
course) a biergarten (beer garden) there are especially the many shops with
everything with glass, crystal and admire ceramic. Dozens enormous
chandeliers, hundreds different glasses of small schnapsglaasjes (liquor
glasses) to enormous beer-glasses, plates (Villeroy & Boch), call it, you
can it find it there. At some places at Joska-Crystal you see employees with
glass bladders, engrave, and painting glass. After so many impressions we
decide to visit the other attractions of Bodenmais for another time and drive
to Kötzting. |

In Kötzting is
the bärwurzerei, the schnapsmuseum and schnapsbrennerei
of Liebl and Drexler. We visit today Drexler. In the small museum
the tools from former times are see concerning how to made Schnaps (liquor)
out of bärwurz. More than 200 historical museum
pieces stand here established which bring the whole process in picture. The
bärwurzel (Ligusticum Mutellina) is 30cm plant high which occurs on the mount
meadows in Bavarian woods on an altitude above the Deliciously
sunk back in the lazy chair, a nice drink, candles all along for the intimacy
and all that in short trousers and shirt. When you do this nowadays,

Our second
day out goes firstly to the Höllensteinsee. We stop at the Dam lake (stuwmeer)
and enjoying the view. On the Höllensteinsee small boats sail and families are
lively busy on the water bicycles. The Höllensteinsee have arisen in the years
1923-1926 by the construction of the Höllenstein-Kraftwerkes (strength call centre). We drive through Viechtach to St. Englmar.
Saint
Englmar itself has one of the oldest glass huts of the
Bavarian woods. Already in 1260 priest Poppo von Niederalteich introduced
glasfenster " ows pine huts of the of the woods" in the convent
church. In the Pfarrkirche of Saint Englmar you find a hinterglas
kreuzweg from the
18th century. Saint Englmar has further numerous summer and winter activities.
In the summer you can join the longest summer toboganning of Bayern , mountenbiken more than

We drive
further and go to Neukirchen and Bogen where we make a short town walk
and enjoy a nice Italian ice cream. At Bogen the Donau flows. If we drive along the Donau we see
how low the waterlevel on the Donau is. Schipping is here not possible. Just a
little furthermore we stop at the Wallfarhtskirche
on the Bogenberg. A splendid
church where dozens of people in expectation are of a marriage. The groom
runs nervously at the entrance of the church whereas the bride something
further is busy with the wedding photographers. Lively
she sways to us. We go rapidly in the church and enjoying all splendour and
pomp. We walk around the church and see from this altitude a good view
concerning the surroundings and especially "the Schöne Blaue
Donau". Just
before the wedding starts we leave and let the future bride couple with their
guests alone. |
|
Given the heat
we decide not to visit Straubing and return to the Campsite. At Arnbruck drive we under airplains who give here a fly
show and drive then to Arrach. A splendid oscillates way especially for motors,
which you lead along the ski area of "the Eck".
On the
camp-site we look for a cool place in and go rapidly swim at the camp-site lake
and rest afterwards from of a very inspiring day.
If we stand up the next day the television at the neighbours is already on.
From the kitchen window the whole family (dad, mom and the two sons 14-17jr)
looks daily a lot of hours to the baffle. The Telly is just turned off before
they got to sleep. We nevertheless have a complete different idea how to spend
your holiday.
The most
places have been now occupied, although that some fixed places, especially the
winter camp places are still unoccupied.
After a delicious shower, which prepares excellent, and a German
breakfast we make us ready for a visit to the Grosse Arber.

The Große Arber with The 44 six-seater Gondola brings you during the summer in
nearly 3 minutes up. Each gondola can accommodate 6 persons (maximum 1440 per
hour) that have to make a unevenness of Then
there is also the annual F.I.S worldcup descent with all world top skiers. After you
have stepped out above from the gondola you must walk the last very steep
piece to the top, what will cost therefore some sweat drops. However you get
fantastic views over the surroundings. The real die-hards climbs still even
on the highest rock points for the most beautiful breathtaking views. |
|
After you have
strengthen the internal person in the restaurants you can choose two ways to go
down again. You can choose for easy way with the gondola, or for one of the
many walking routes which are indicated here. We choose
for the lazy descent with the gondola. Edith's brother Albert who has
celebrated with friends here just before us there holiday, have chosen for the
short walk of one hour. Unfortunately for them they chose underway the wrong
junction. Total exhausted and very thirsty they reached after more then 4 hours
their own car. The gondola in just 3 minutes seemed thus for us the only and
correct alternative.
|
|
After our
visit to the Grosse Arber we continue the route to Arnbruck. Here you find the Weinfurtner Glasdorf, beside Joska-Crystal one of the largest glass workshops in The Weinfurtner glasdorf is a village in itself, in the
middle of Arnbruck. Here too a lot of shops with everything in the field of
glass. We even see in the middle of the summer at 38 degrees a real Christ's marked. In the glass hut
three people in united co-operation stand to blow the glass. In a
demonstration of 20 minutes they explain how all the glasswork is made.
Somewhere else the glass is painted, whereas in a another building the glass
is engraved and sharpened. We return
to the camp-site and after a delicious cooling off in the lake we fall
gloriously down, grilling our flesh on the zibrogril and as the evening
enters the candles and the torch take care of a romantic atmosphere. |

Our next
trip will go to Czechia and to the place Domazlice. According to many
others a nice place to visit, so we want to see that by usself. The neighbours
on the campsite, tell us that we should bests pass the border at Eslkam. A
small border which we pass without many problems.
Domazlice
is a place with 11500 inhabitants and fall because of historical
architecture entirely under monument care. Initially it was a border station,
which arose by the old trading way of Regensburg to Bohemia. In German the
place also is called Taus. In the years1262-1265 the Bohemia king Premsyl
Otakar II in this market municipality founded a royal establishment city. The
elongated Market Square on with much portico stands has also still a tower and
two urban gateways. The northern gateway was brought down in 1838, western in
1841. To the most important curiosities belong also the Dekanaatschurch Maria
birth, the Augustiner convent and the Maria ascension church. Of the former
citadel Chodsko there is only one tower remained (now small museum).

The city Domazlice with view on one of the two
towers. On the second a photograph of a chod.
Domazlice
is the homeland of the Chodden. This people were also the bohemia
shots called, bravely and proud. Their music instrument has very much gone of
the Scottish bagpipe. In the city Domazlice yearly in august the Chodse
annually celebrate with old folk music and folk dance. During these festivals
the delicious traditionally prepared wafers are sold. The folklore museum has
an interesting folk collection.
On the
market with a lot of stands, which are manned by Asians, we buy a short trouser
for only 8 Euro. In of the small shops we sell a bottle Becherovka, the Czech national drink. On the way back we
want pass the border at Furth im Wald, but the Czech parking guy tells us no to do so today because of the
market in Domazlice who attracted many Germans. At the
border there will be a waiting time for 3-4 hours. We take back therefore the
same route and come at Eslkam back in Germany. Guards at the border, now we
haven't seen them.
|
We keep
on driving to the Hohen Bogen, a summer and winter sport centre.
From the camp-site we look at one site of the Hohen Bogen, but it becomes
time for a more closely visit. The Hohen Bogen (1079m) is accessible from Neukirchen b.Hl.Blut. In the summer you can with one
of the longest 2-persoons chair lifts in the Bavarian Forest go up. The |

We decide
to visit Kötzting once more closely. Except for the shopping which we here
always do we in this casino city we haven't seen much of Kötzting. Kötzting is a "Kneippkurort" what becomes
clear at 87000m² sizes cure harbour park with among other things a clinic for
traditional Chinese medicine techniques and a large offer to all kinds of
fitness equipment. Kötzting is a modern trade and service centre for this part
of Bayern. You can test your luck in the Bayerische Spielbank, the Bavarian casino. The tourist can visit one
of the beautiful churches, a walk along the bank of the Weisser river, just
enjoy the beautiful houses in the inner town or let spoil itself in the
enchanting English tea house. To festivities there is also no lack in Kötzting.
The Pfingstfestwoche with the
Pfingstritthave celebrated that since 1412
celebrated, the culture festival, the Waldfestspiele on the Ludwigsberg, the Bürgerfest, the Rosstag
and the Christmas marked show how large this small city can be.

The Kirchenburg |
The procession |
We make the
walk along the Weißer Regen and the centre of the city and
visit the Kirchenburg,, an old defence rampart with a
castle with as centre the Pfarrkirche. The outside walls, the old sepulchres,
the inside ring, the square tower, everything is still present. The castle from
the 12e centuries had come in
|
schnapsbrennerei Liebl |
On the
way back to our car we rapidly go to Schnapsbrennerei Liebl. Here you can see through a window
the kettle of the largest schnapsbrennerei of Bayern. In the neighbour shop
you find all kinds of fire water products to buy. We decide just to look at
it, we still have a small stock on the camp-site. The Zibrogril is again set
up and we let ourselves the fried potatoes with lettuce are tasted well.
Evenings we sit deliciously for our folding caravan (tent trailer) with around us the candle lights for the convivial atmosphere. |
During the
night we have enjoyed the first rain for weeks. The thunderstorm, which blows over, keeps Edith some
hours from her sleep. Gerald become just awake at the hardest claps but sleep
afterwards lively further. The temperature by day continues to just above the
thirty degrees, the nights become fortunately, however, something more pleasant
|
Our last
week already started and we decide once again to visit Czechia. At the border in Furth im Wald stands s traffic-jam which ensures us that it take us 45 minutes
before we pass the border. That's what you thinks at least, some hundreds of
meters away you find another border line, so we close up again. Halfway
the two borderlines there are tax-free shop. Since we have no sense to stay
in the traffic-jam on the way back again we
decide here to do our Czech purchases. A litre Bacardi for 6.70 Euro
and a bottle Becherovka for only 3.30 Euro. We take away therefore some bottles. |

The Drachenstichfest in the arena in the middle of in the city |
On the
way back we visit the frontier city Furth im
Wald themselves.
If we walk into this nice little town we see several small children and some
parents who were dressed as
it were the middle ages. The shop
street is closed halfway. Here you stand suddenly for an enormous arena,
which is put here each year for the large dragon festivity. Of the 2e up to the 3e Sunday in august you
can be a witness of
the grandiose national feast of the East
Bavarian history. A historical procession with 1400 costume persons, 200
horses, musicgroups and festival vehicles pass the streets of 500 Years
ago the dragon thrust belonged
to a religious procession. Later, since 1897 the dragon festivity has been organised by the occupants of If we
return to the car we see many people who are stand or sit next to the road.
There proves to be another
festivity today in De
Children's procession starts with musical accompaniment. Children splendid dressed as medieval knights at
horse or as other occupants at foot pass by. Moving to see that children of 3 or 4 years run as
proud as a peacock with a sword in the hand here beyond. |
|
Children's procession |
If the procession
has passed us we step in the car and drive further direction Cham. Cham is 1000 years old trade city which by
the
centuries several times have devastated and have been built up again. The historical
pedestrian centre of the town has a splendid market and church quare with a
very beautiful sculpture
fountain. We pick here one of the nice terrace for a cold drink and
spoil ourselves afterwards on a kebab roll before we drive the way back to the
camp-site.

After a day rest it is time for a next exploration in Bavarian forest. We drive on the meanwhile
well-known oscillate road between Arrach and Arnbruck to our first
stop in Bodenmais. Whereas most of the buses go to
the factory halls of Joska Crystal themselves we park our car in the
centre of Bodenmais. As first visits we a shop where candles, candles and
especially candles are sold. Birth candles, anniversary candles, toy candles
or all kinds of animals as a candle, choice therefore enough. |
|
Furthermore
are there in Bodenmais sufficient curiosities present so you can amuse yourself
for hours and hours. The Historic Silberbergwerk with the Silberbergbahn with toboggan slide and a large adventures playground, the glass huts,
the woodcarving, the
churches, the candle factory of Kerzenland Mangold (candle land) Mangold or you let
yourself drive deliciously with the little citytrain, in a horse coach or wintry in a horse
luge.
We drive further through the Arber area and stop at the border city Bayerisch Eisenstein (724m). Also an open-air treatment resort likes almost each village in Bavaria and also of course a glass hut. In this border city with view concerning the Grosse Arber (1456m) we make also a town walk along the Weiße Regen which is here too exceptional low. Especially summery a walk and mountenbike paradise, winters Bayerisch Eisenstein is been especially populated with ski-lovers which exploit the new gondola.
Now we
stand near to the border we decide for the third time this holiday to visit
Czechia. After not much further than a couple hundred meters we pass without
any problems the border. Right after the border you find all kind of roofed and
not roofed shops, most with Asians. Some waiting, but the most insistently try
here too sell all kind of stuffs to the tourists. We let us seduce to the purchase
of some shoes, one couple for Edith and one couple for Gerald.
On the
camp-site we hear on the radio warnings for heavy weather that would blow over Bavarian for the
coming hours. People are called to report it to others who do not hear it or to
people who doesn't understand German
language. On the camp-site it turn out better than expected. It starts blow and
rain for a while, but this lasts not long. We decide therefore to visit the
restaurant at the entrance of the camp-site "Rauber Heigl" once more and enjoy a
delicious eating.
|
Our last
day excursion. We drive to Rimbach
to visit the woodcarving
museum, but the road to Rimbach is closed, therefore we drive to Miltach. There we want visit the
castle, but we pass the castle before we were beware of it. A good beginning of the day therefore. We
decide to give the castle on the way back
a second give chance and drive over the B81 to the direction of Viechtach. Halfway we refuse to drive to Rattenberg. In Rattenberg you find a Uhrenmuseum,
Heimatmuseum and a ruïne. By means of a splendid route with a lot of nice
views and by several ski areas we drive finally left to Saint Englmar.
Shortly after the turning we see again on the left the summer tobagganing slide which becomes very visited.
The slide counts ten hair peeling turning and sees spectacularly. At the Predigtstuhl

Hierna rijden we verder naar Viechtach op weg naar de Große
Pfahl. De Bayerische
Pfahl Hereafter
we drive further to Viechtach
on gone to the Grosse Pfahl. The Bayerische
Pfahl is one of
the most striking geological objects in Bavarian. If an exposed spinal column, alights it
from the surface of the earth. Total 150km long of Nabburg in the Oberfalz in
the Northwest to Passau in the south west on Bavarian territory to stop in
Austria briefly afterwards Linz. For more
than 300 millions years it reached in the current in the middle of Europe a
meeting of prim(a)eval continents
of North America, European Asia and Africa. What followed were that there
from Spain to East Europe new mountains arose what we call now the mid-size mountains. In
Germany arose as such the black forest (Schwarzwald), the Harz, the
Erzgebergte and also the Bayerische Wald (Bavarian Forest). By the times gone
here it's superior stones drain by the large landslides and depressed in each
other again. As important crack line, which the border between the first and
hindmost part of the Bavarian forest still refer to, the "Pfahlstörung" geologically moored. At the
beginning of the 19 centuries mount crystal was used for street construction.
This led to many cracks and a lot of picturesque stone parties became demolished. Momentary still in use are
factories which still occupy themselves with the extraction of mount crystal
uses this especially to produce silicon for computer chips. What the natural
erosion in million years couldn't do, a human being has within
limited time, however, succeeded. |

Uitzicht over Viechtach |

the short route for the Große Pfahl, read on the shields and see how

from the Grosse Pfahl you have a good view concerning the surroundings and
especially concerning Viechtach.

If we go
further and drive in Miltach along the castle Gerald sees of a sudden the
storks the roof of the castle. We decide not for the second time to drive on
and put the car on the side and walk back to the castle Miltach. First something concerning the stork nest of castle Miltach. Already many years a stork's couple comes in March to the
castle to look after posterity.
The previous 3 years led this to 10 young ones. This year the woman stork was greeted exuberantly by
its man on Sunday 28 March. On 28 May the Miltacher stork foreman Manfred
Renner said that this year perhaps 4 young ones can be welcome there. On 17 June Manfred Renner explain
that it would be 2 young one
nevertheless that are fed affectionately. He confirmed the number on 30 June and says that the young ones grows
super-fast. If on 16 July a strange stork couple wants to visit the castle also
there are some times a day a fight between the stork couples. By applauding
violently with the wings and some appearance attacks of papa stork the strange
couple disappear. Between 27 July and 5 Augusts flap the young ones impatiently
and jump already two meters high in the nest. The young animals are than
already larger then mummy stork. As then on 9 august the two young ones makes
there first careful rounds the feast in the village is complete. The coming two
to three weeks the young ones must gain sufficient experience to be able to
accomplish the long travel to Africa well.

|
But
then... on 20 Augusts there is large panic. Papa stork has been collided. The
woman who controlled the car worries herself right sweetly for him and
involves Manfred Renner right away. The stork lies firstly inert in the
pasture. After some time the stork independently stand up. Manfred Renner
observe that the animal has no blood. However, he 6 finds mice and a lot of
other animals with which the stork was underway to its young ones. A day
later papa moves himself again something and starts to search for something
to eat. Mamma stork and its two young ones have meanwhile affiliated themselves to an
12 couple stork group and have left direction Africa. A day later papa
attempts to make some take offs, but most of the time he sits on a sand-bank
in the river. The determine not to disturb the stork and give him the
occasion for a entirely heal. Also the
next days there is no change, the stork won't let someone within a distance
of 20 meters at him. On 30 Augusts he lets nevertheless catch itself and he
is brought to a bird shelter. The veterinary surgeon has high hope all that
everything comes well. Just some days
later, on 2 September papa stork, now Beppo called, flies again. If on the
same day a stork colony settles on to the rain bank is this a excellence chance. With this
colony Beppo fly away to undertake the 10000 km to Africa. Let's
hope that he is sufficiently repairs for these long and heavy travel. Next
year can you on the special Miltacher storks site read how it has expired
with the stork family and if they have returned to castle Miltach. |

|

Castle Miltach in 1720
Castle Miltach now |
Castle
Miltach supposedly was built by Justinian von Peilnstein end 16th/beginning
17th century. The later owner von Schönprunn cultivated the castle around
1750 further. This family had the castle for 200 years in its possession. In
the history of the castle here much grand festivals with music and dancing have
taken place. Celebrities such
as Simeon Piscevic, adjudant under Maria Theresia von Österreich and General
under Katharina II of Russia, spent the winter 1744/45 at host barons Johann
Josef Wenzeslaus Freiherr von Schönprunn. Another occupant of 1872-1875 was
the boasted writer Maximilian Schmidt, genannt Waldschmidt. In 1979,
the family
Schleyerbach
became the owner of the meanwhile heavily declined castle. At the modernisation,
which followed in the years then, the as much as possible original situation
of the castle was reconstructed. In 1982, the castle was in)habitable again and could
be visited until now. The
complete upper part of the castle are now accessible. Here you retrieve in
the different original arranged chambers the history of the beautiful castle.
The stove furnace,
painted windows, a splendid arranged table, the kitchen, a hunting chamber,
the wedding chamber or a reading room, everything is original arranged. |
Downstairs
you can buy in the shop historical books, illustrated magazines or hand-made
Articles. After a visit to pot bakery you
catch what to drink in the music cellar. Regularly in the castle shows
as a traditional concert or a jazz evening is organised. And as from by the end
of March up to beginning September you can enjoy the stork's family on top of
the castle Miltach roof.

After our
visit to the castle and after we have swayed for the last time to the family
stork we step in the car and go to Kötzting for the last shopping. Also even
rapidly to the schnapsbrennerei of Drexler to lay in some bottles of this
delicious fire water.
|
The next
day to start we slowly with wrapping up. Evenings we go out to the
restaurant, therefore almost everything can be wrapped up already. The tent-fly and the front tent
are broken off and
what remains is no longer than only the carriage of the folding caravan (tent trailer).
Thus our spot looks now enormously. After
eating we sit again for the folding
caravan (tent trailer) and drink the last schnaps in Bavaria. Tomorrow morning by 7 hours stand up, the
last matter wraps up, the folding
caravan (tent trailer) fold in and couple it to our Deawoo Nubira station
car. Just rapidly take a shower and we drive direction the entrance gate. At the
reception there must still be paid natural. After the 380 Euro Changed over
in other hands we say goodbye
to comfort campsite Frits Berger. After a
successful travel we arrive more than 9 hours later in our trusted Hengelo.
Again a quiet travel without traffic-jam. |
