CIAF 2004 Impressions at Brno-Turany Airport Czech Republic 3 - 5 September 2004 (Part 6)

By Esther & Martin Scharenborg

Time to take a closer look at the Ukrainian particpators. As already said before, the Su-27 Flankers came from Mirgorod Airbase where the 831 IAP (fighter regiment) is based. The aircraft were accompanied by an IL-76MD Candid from the Kiev-Borispol based 321. TAP. The Flankers were freshly repainted as they wore a more dull colourscheme with red codes before. Nowadays the 831. IAP is wearing blue codes on their aircrafts colourfull camouflage.

Clearly visible is the blue serial on the tail along with the national emblem of the Ukrainian Air Force and squadron badge on this Su-27 Flanker. Picture: Martin Scharenborg/ Global Aviation Review.

The IL-76MD Candid is always an impressive sight. The "78820" took technicians and other Ukrainian Air Force military to Brno to support the Su-27 Flankers. Martin Scharenborg/ Global Aviation Review.

Another view on this mighty IL-76MD of the Ukrainian Air Force. Like the Russian & Indian Air Force, the Ukrainian Air Force is also using the IL-78 Midas variant which is especially equipped for air-to-air refulling. Martin Scharenborg/ Global Aviation Review.

Not exactly a glass cockpit. Despite the fact that the Sukhoi Su-27 Flanker is one of the most modern fighters in the world, the aircraft lacks sophisticated displays & instruments in its cockpit. Nevertheless the aircraft is praised for its userfriendlyness and reliability. Martin Scharenborg / Global Aviation Review.

Hopefully we will see much more of the Ukrainian in the near future, as they have been regular visitors to airshows in the Czech & Slovak Republic during the last years like the CIAF & SIAD events.
