IN THE CAN : SEPTEMBER 1959

Thursday, September 3, 1959 :  In New York City's Atlantic studio, 
BOBBY DARIN records four tracks for the LP "This Is Darin" (Atco 33-115,
released in February 1960) : Clementine, All Nite Long, Guys and Dolls, 
and I can't Give You Anything But Love, Baby. "Clementine" was selected
for single release (Atco 6161) in March 1960. Production by the Ertegun 
brothers (Ahmet and Nesuhi). Arrangements by Richard Wess and Buddy
Bregman.
 
September 8, 1959 : BOB LUMAN's second session for Warner Bros, in
Nashville. "Dreamy Doll"/"Buttercup" becomes the new single (WB 5105),
while "Love Creator" and "Lonely Road" went originally unissued. "Love
Creator" was first released on the Bear Family LP "More of that Rocker"
in 1980 and "Lonely Road" on the Sparkletone CD "Bob Luman Rocks"
in 1995.
 
September 9 and 10, 1959 : JOE TURNER records the LP "Big Joe Rides
Again" (Atlantic 1332, released August 1960). There are only 10 tracks on 
this LP, but they are all on the long side, with "Rebecca" even running to
7:05. "I Got the World on a String" from this session remains unissued 
and was replaced on the album by a leftover from 1956, "Pennies From
Heaven". Production by Nesuhi Ertegun.
On September 29, 1959 Joe records four more tracks, this time produced
by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. They are released on two singles, "Honey
Hush"/"Tomorrow Night" (Atlantic 2044, December 1959) and "Chains Of
Love"/ "My Little Honeydripper" (Atlantic 2054, March 1960). "Honey Hush"
and "Chains of Love" are remakes of Joe's earlier Atlantic hits. Session
personnel includes King Curtis on tenor sax, Lloyd Trotman on bass, Mickey
Baker on guitar and Belton Evans on drums. 
 
September 14, 1959 : An early session (10:00-13:00) at RCA Victor Studio
in Nashville for sax man BOOTS RANDOLPH, produced by Chet Atkins.
"Temptation" becomes the new single (RCA 47-7611), coupled with the
previously (July 1, 1959) recorded "Sweet Talk". "Red Light" and "La
Golondrina" are released back to back on RCA 47-7721 in April 1960.
Backing by James Rich (guitar), Hank Garland (guitar), Bob Moore (bass),
Floyd Cramer (piano), Buddy Harman (drums) and the Anita Kerr Singers.
 
September 15, 1959 : LINK WRAY is at the CBS studios in New York
City, with Vernon Wray (rhythm guitar), Doug Wray (drums), Shorty
Horton (bass) and an unknown pianist. Four tracks are recorded: Slinky,
Handclapper, Caroline and Studio Blues. The next day, Link and his boys
record Rendezvous and Ramble. All six tracks appear on Link's first LP, 
"Link Wray & the Raymen" in 1960 (Epic LN-3661).
Slinky / Rendezvous is also issued as a single on Epic 9343 in December
1959.
 
September 17, 1959 : First of three recording dates for BILL HALEY and 
his Comets this month, as usual at the Pythian Temple in New York City,
under the A&R guidance of Milt Gabler. "Puerto Rican Peddler" (Decca
31030) and "Music, Music, Music" (Decca 31080) are both released as
singles. "Skokiaan" (A-side of Decca 31030) and "Drowsy Waters" are
laid down on September 23, followed by "Two Shadows", "In a Little Spanish 
Town", "Strictly Instrumental" (Decca 31080) and "Mack the Knife" on
September 24. All eight tunes are instrumentals and will come out on the
LP "Strictly Instrumental" (Decca DL 8964) on December 14, 1959.
 
Friday September 18, 1959 : ROY ORBISON records his second Monument
single, "Up Town"/"Pretty One" (Monument 412, released in December), plus
"Raindrops", which will get a place on his first Monument LP, "Lonely and
Blue", in 1960. The Bear Family box discography says "Bob Moore, bass,
other details unknown", but Floyd Cramer (piano), Boots Randolph (sax)
and the Anita Kerr Singers are clearly recognizable. Location: RCA Studio,
800 17th Avenue South, Nashville. Producer: Fred Foster.
 
(Circa) September 20, 1959 : After UK licensing troubles with the lyrics
for "Danny Boy" (aka "Londonderry Air"), CONWAY TWITTY puts new 
lyrics to the song (which is in the public domain), calls it "Rosaleena"
and overdubs his vocal to the "Danny Boy" backing track. "Rosaleena" 
is released in the UK (MGM 1047) and other European countries, but not
in the US.
 
September 26, 1959 : FATS DOMINO records his new single, "Be My 
Guest"/"I've Been Around" (Imperial 5629, released in October), of course
at Cosimo Recording Studio in New Orleans. Personnel: Fats Domino,
vocal/piano ; Roy Montrell, guitar ; Cornelius Coleman, drums ; Buddy
Hagans, tenor sax ; Clarence Ford, baritone sax ; Dave Bartholomew,
trumpet (and production) ; Unknown, bass.
 
September 28, 1959 : JOHNNY HORTON records a first version of "Ole
Slew Foot", which will remain unissued until the release of Bear Family
box-set and, a little later, the "Rockin' Rollin' Johnny Horton" CD on Bear
Family 15543. The next day, September 29, Johnny lays down his new
single "I'm Ready If You're Willing"/"Take Me Like I Am" (Columbia 41502, 
for release in October). Personnel on both days: Johnny Horton, vocal/
guitar ; Grady Martin, guitar ; Hank Garland, guitar ; Tommy Tomlinson,
guitar ; Joe Zinkan, bass ; Floyd Cramer, piano ; Buddy Harman, drums.
Producer : Don Law, at Bradley Studio in Nashville. 
 
September 29, 1959 : In New York City, LITTLE ANTHONY and the 
Ímperials record their next single, "Shimmy Shimmy, Ko-Ko-Bop"/
"I'm Still In Love With You" (End 1060, for release in November).
 
September 30, 1959 : A New York recording date by RUTH BROWN
produces two singles: "Don't Deceive Me"/"I Burned Your Letter" (Atlantic
2052, March 1960) and "What I Wouldn't Give"/"The Door Is Still Open"
(Atlantic 2064, June 1960). Production by Ahmet Ertegun and Jerry
Wexler. Personnel includes Mickey Baker and Carl Lynch on guitars,
Abie Baker on bass and Sticks Evans on drums. Strings arranged and
conducted by Richard Wess.
 
Probably early September 1959 : DALE HAWKINS records at WCAU
studios in Philadelphia, with Roy Buchanan (guitar), Kenny Paulsen
(guitar), unknown tenor sax, unknown bass, Jerry Hawkins (maracas)
and Ronnie Lewis (drums). The result is the great single "Liza Jane"/
"Back To School Blues" (Checker 934), released in October. An alternate
version of "Back To School Blues", also recorded at this session, first
came out on Chess 6445 201 in the UK. One other, unknown title was
recorded.
 
September 1959, unknown date : SANFORD CLARK is at Audio Recorders
in Phoenix, Arizona, to record his next single, "Son of a Gun"/"I Can't
Help It" (Jamie 1139). Al Casey plays guitar, other details unknown.
