IN THE CAN : NOVEMBER 1959
November 2, 1959 : In London, JOHNNY KIDD records his second single,
"If You Were the Only Girl in the World"/"Feelin'" (HMV POP 674), as well
as "Steady Date", which remained unreleased until the "Rarities" LP of 1983.
November 4, 1959 : Recording date of THE HOLLYWOOD FLAMES's
"Every Day, Every Way"/"If I Thought You Needed Me" (Atco 6155).
November 6, 1959 : BILLY "CRASH" CRADDOCK is at Bradley Studio in
Nashville, with Grady Martin (guitar), Harold Bradley (guitar), Joe Zinkan
(bass), Floyd Cramer (piano), Boots Randolph (sax) and Buddy Harman
(drums). "I Want That"/"Since She Turned Seventeen" is chosen for the
new single (Columbia 41536). "Little Ole You" and "(What Makes You)
Treat Me Like You Do" remain in the can until 1992, when Bear Family
releases the CD "Boom Boom Baby" (BCD 15610). Producer: Don Law.
November 10, 1959 : RICKY NELSON records songs for his gospel EP
"Ricky Sings Spirituals" (Imperial IMP 165) : "Glory Train" and "I Bowed
My Head In Shame". The other two songs, "March With the Band of the
Lord" and "If You Believe It" were first attempted at a session on November
19-20 and finished on December 8. Vocal backing by the Blossoms.
From this point on, Ray Johnson replaces Gene Garf as Ricky's regular
session pianist.
November 10-13, 1959 : Four days of session work for CONWAY TWITTY,
with Al Bruno (guitar), Jack Nance (drums) and members of the Nashville
A-team, at Bradley Studio in Nashville, produced by Jim Vienneau.
The harvest of the first day: My Adobe Hacienda*, A Huggin' and a Kissin' *
and Star-Spangled Heaven (MGM 12857), followed by "Lonely Blue Boy"
(the next single, MGM 12857), Can't We Go Steady* and Sorry* on 11th
November. Blue Moon* and Eternal Tears* were laid down on November 12
and "Foggy River" and "Platinum High School" on November 13. The last
mentioned two tracks will come out on the LP "Touch" in 1961, the tracks
marked with * on the LP "Lonely Blue Boy" (MGM SE 3818) in 1960.
November 12, 1959 : DON AND DEWEY have a session at Sound Enterprises
in Hollywood, produced by Harold Battiste. Recorded: "Pink Champagne"
(first released on the LP "Don and Dewey", Specialty 2131, 1970), "My Love"
(unissued) and "Jump Awhile" (Fidelity 3017). Personnel: Don Harris (vocals,
electric violin), Dewey Terry (vocals, guitar), Harold Battiste (alto sax), Plas
Johnson (tenor sax), Roy Lanham (guitar), H.B. Barnum (piano), William
Pittman (bass) and Earl Palmer (drums).
November 16, 1959 : THE COLLINS KIDS record their final Columbia single,
"The Lonesome Road"/"Another Man Done Gone" (4-41541, released in the
last week of December). Personnel: Larry Collins, vocal/guitar ; Lorrie
Collins, vocal/guitar ; Grady Martin, guitar ; Hank Garland, guitar ; Harold
Bradley, guitar ; Joe Zinkan, bass ; Floyd Cramer, piano ; Buddy Harman,
drums. Location: Bradley Studio, Nashville. Producer : Don Law.
November 18, 1959 : At Bell Sound Studio in NYC, THE ROCK-A-TEENS
record material for their first (and only) LP : "Woo-Hoo" (Roulette 25109).
Among the tracks recorded on this day are "Lotta Boppin'" and "Doggone
It Baby", which will also be released as a single (Roulette 4217) in mid-
December. Recordings for the LP will be completed on January 13, 1960.
November 18, 1959 : MARTY ROBBINS lays down three tracks at Bradley
Studio, produced by Don Law : "Sweet Cora", "Ain't Life a Crying Shame"
and "Silence and Tears". They were first released several decades later by
Bear Family (LP : "Files, Vol. 5" - BFX 15139 and CD "Rockin' Rollin' Robbins,
Vol. 3 : Ruby Ann", BCD 15669). In 1962, Marty re-recorded "Ain't Life A
Crying Shame" in 1962 for his "Devil Woman" album. Personnel: Marty
Robbins (vocals, ukelele), Grady Martin and Jack Pruett (guitars), Joe Zinkan
(bass), Louis Dunn (drums), Marvin Hughes (piano).
November 18, 1959 : Meanwhile, on the other side of the Atlantic, CLIFF
RICHARD records "Fall In Love With You"/"Willie and the Hand Jive", for
release on Columbia DB 4431 in March 1960. The next day he lays down
"Don't Be Mad At Me", which will become the B-side of his next single,
"A Voice in the Wilderness" (Columbia DB 4398), released on January 7,
1960. Production by Norrie Paramor.
November 20-24, 1959 : DUANE EDDY records material for his third album,
"The Twang's the Thang" (Jamie LP 3009). Work is started on November 20
with "Blueberry Hill", "Route # 1" and "You Are My Sunshine", followed on
the next day by "St. Louis Blues", "Rebel Walk" (the later B-side of "Because
They're Young", Jamie 1156) and "My Blue Heaven" (the even later B-side of
"Drivin' Home", Jamie 1200, 1961). Also recorded on the 21st, but not on the
LP : "Bonnie Came Back"/"Lost Island" (Jamie 1144, the next single).
The harvest of November 23 is "Easy", "The Last Minute of Innocence" and
"Trambone" (released as a single on Jamie 1209 in early 1962), plus the
undubbed version of "The Secret Seven" (not on the LP, became the B-side
of "Shazam!" in April 1960, Jamie 1151).
Finally, on November 24, Duane completes "The Battle" (also issued later on
Jamie 1209), "Night Train to Memphis" and "Tiger Love and Turnip Greens",
as well as the raw version of "Kommotion" (not on the LP). Most of the tracks
from these four days were overdubbed on December 1 and 3 by a vocal chorus,
the Evelyn Freeman Singers.

November 25, 1959, Bell Sound Studio, New York City : JACK SCOTT has
his first session for the Top Rank label, with the Chantones. The result is
the single "What in the World's Come Over "You"/"Baby, Baby", released
on Top Rank 2025 around Christmas 1959. Produced by Sonny Lester,
arranged by Bill Sanford. Also recorded at this session is "Oh, Little One",
which will become the B-side of "Burning Bridges" (Top Rank 2041) in March
1960.
Probably November 1959, unknown date : SONNY BURGESS is at the old
Sun studio, 706 Union Avenue, Memphis. Recorded are the following tracks:
"Sadie's Back In Town"/ "A Kiss Goodnight" (Phillips International 3551),
"Little Town Baby", "Mr. Blues" and "I Love You So". These last three tracks
were first released on Charly CR 30115 (LP "Sun : The Roots Of Rock, Vol. 5 :
Sun Rocks") in 1977. Personnel: Sonny Burgess, vocals, guitar ; Roland Janes,
guitar ; J.C. Caughron, bass ; Ed Thomas, piano ; Jimmy Van Eaton, drums.
During November 1959 LARRY WILLIAMS recorded "Get Ready" for the Chess
brothers in Chicago. With unknown support (guitar, bass, drums, trombone &
vocal group), this track was used for his second Chess single (1745), c/w
"Baby Baby" from the July 1959 session. It was also released in the UK on
London HLM 9053.
November 1959, unknown date : ELMORE JAMES has a session in Chicago,
produced by Bobby Robinson. "The Sky Is Crying"/"Held My Baby Last Night"
(Fire 1016) and the instrumental "Bobby's Rock" (Fire 1011) are issued as 45s.
A new version of "Dust My Broom" and "Baby Please Set A Date" will end up
as LP tracks. All five tracks are on the Capricorn CD "King of the Slide Guitar".

November 1959, unknown date : At Bell Sound Studio in New York City, RONNIE HAWKINS
lays down the remaining four tracks for the LP "Mr. Dynamo" (Roulette SR 25102), released
in early 1960 : "Lonely Hours", "Clara", "Honey Don't" and "Sick And Tired"
(the first two tracks also issued as a single, Roulette 4228, in February 1960).
Accompaniment by Fred Carter, Jr. (lead guitar), Jimmy "Luke" Paulman (rhythm guitar),
Jimmy Evans (bass), unknown (organ) and Levon Helm (drums).
