IN THE CAN : MARCH 1960

March 1, 1960 : JACK SCOTT arrives at Bell Sound Studio in New
York City for a session produced by Lester Sill and Bill Sanford.
"It's My Way of Loving You" and "My King" will be issued on the LP
"What in the World's Come Over You" (Top Rank RS-626). The same
goes for "I'm Satisfied With You" and "Am I the One", recorded on
March 11 (same studio, same producers). Vocal backing by the
Chantones, more personnel details unknown.
 
Monday, March 7, 1960 : At United Recording Corporation in Hollywood, 
JOHNNY BURNETTE records "Don't Do It" and "Patrick Henry", which 
will be rush-released as his second Liberty single (55243) two weeks later. 
Personnel : Bobby Gibbons, Vito Mumolo and Allan Reuss, guitars ; Ernie 
Freeman, piano ; Red Callender, bass ; Frank Capp, drums. Producer : 
Snuff Garrett.
 
March 7, 1960 : First of four days of session work for JOHNNY HORTON.
"Ole Slew Foot" /"Miss Marcy" (Columbia 42063) will not be issued
during Johnny's lifetime, nor will "Sleepy-Eyed John"/"They'll Never Take
Her Love From Me" (Columbia 41963, April 1961). The B-side of this last
single is recorded on March 9, along with "The Mansion You Stole" (the
later B-side of "North To Alaska", Columbia 41782) and "The Sinking of the 
Reuben James", a track for the LP "Johnny Horton Makes History" (Columbia
CL 1478 / CS 8269). Further material (8 tracks) for this LP is recorded on
March 10 and 11. "Johnny Freedom" and "Comanche (The Brave Horse") 
from the March 11 session also came out on a 45 (Columbia 41685) in June 
1960. Personnel includes Grady Martin, Hank Garland and Buddy Harman.

March 7, 1960 : CHARLIE RICH is at 639 Madison Avenue in Memphis, the
new Sun studio. "Schooldays" will become the B-side of "Gonna Be Waiting"
(Phillips International 3560) in July. "That's How Much I Love You" and the
jazzy "Come Back" get a place on the LP "Lonely Weekends" (Phillips Int.
PLP 1970) later in the year. "I've Lost My Heart To You" is first (? I think) issued 
on Charlie's LP "A Time For Tears" (Sun LP 123) in 1971.

March 8, 1960 : THE EVERLY BROTHERS have their first session (produced
by themselves) for their new label, Warner Bros, in RCA Studio B in Nashville. 
On this day they record "Sleepless Nights", "What Kind of Girl Are You" and 
"Nashville Blues", followed on March 17 by "Carol Jane" and "You Thrill Me". 
The next day, March 18, Don and Phil record both sides of their new single,
"Cathy's Clown"/"Always It's You" (WB 5151), a new version of "Oh, True 
Love" (previously recorded for Cadence but unreleased until the 21st century) 
and Fats Domino's "I Want You To Know". "Some Sweet Day" and "Just in 
Case" are laid down on March 22, and "That's What You Do To Me", "Memories
Are Made of This" and "So Sad" (released as a single on Warner Bros 5163 in 
August) on March 24. All tracks, except "Cathy's Clown" and "Always It's 
You", appear on the LP "It's Everly Time" (Warner Bros WS 1381), released 
in April. Personnel includes Hank Garland, Harold Bradley, Chet Atkins and
Ray Edenton (guitar), Lightnin' Chance (bass), Floyd Cramer (piano) and
Buddy Harman (drums). Engineer : Bill Porter. 
 
March 9, 1960 : First post-Sun session for WARREN SMITH, at Radio Recorders
in Hollywood. "Cave In"/"I Don't Believe I'll Fall In Love Today" is selected for
single release in April (Liberty 55248*). The Wayne Walker composition "After
the Boy Gets the Girl" will see a release on the LP "The First Country Collection
of Warren Smith" (Liberty LRP 3199) in 1961.

March 10, 1960 : First SMILEY LEWIS session since June 1958. Two singles
are the result : "Oh Red!"/"I Want To Be With Her" (Imperial 5662, April) and 
"Ain't Goin' There No More"/"Last Night" (Imperial 5676, June). Backing by the
band of Dave Bartholomew, who also acts as producer. Location : Cosimo
Recording Studios in New Orleans. 
 
March 11, 1960 : DUANE EDDY is at United Recorders in Hollywood, with
a 15-piece string section, arranged by Bob Thompson. The theme from the 
movie "Because They're Young" will be issued on Jamie 1156 in May ; it will
become Duane's biggest hit. "Theme For Moon Children" becomes the B-side
of "Kommotion" (Jamie 1163) in August. A third track, "Back Porch" (Parts
1 & 2 - without strings), remains on the shelf until the release of the Duane
Eddy box-set "Twangin' From Phoenix To L.A." (Bear Family BCD 15778) 
in 1994. Production by Lee Hazlewood and Lester Sill.
 
March 11, 1960 : At Bradley Studio in Nashville, MARVIN RAINWATER
records his next single, "Hard Luck Blues"/"She's Gone", "with seven
musicians" (Bear Family discography). Release in April on MGM 12891.
 
March 14, 1960 : CARL MANN records material for an LP ("Like Mann!", 
Phillips International PLP 1960) at the new Sun studio in Memphis : "If I
Ever Needed You", "Island of Love", "I'm Coming Home" (also released as
a single, Phillips Int. 3555), "Walkin' and Thinkin'" and probably also "Baby
I Don't Care" and "I'm Bluer Than Anyone Can Be", though the Bear Family
discography dates these last two at "possibly February 22". "It Really
Doesn't Matter Now" remains unissued until the release of the Bear Family
box-set. Eddie Bush is on guitar as usual, Robert Oatsvall on bass, Charlie
Rich on piano and W.S. Holland on drums. Production by Sam Phillips and
Charles Underwood.
 
March 14-15, 1960 : JOHNNY PRESTON records the follow-up to his big hit 
"Running Bear" : "Cradle of Love" c/w "City of Tears" (Mercury 71598). Two
other tracks, "Chief Heartbreak" and "Madre de Dios" end up on Johnny's first
LP, "Running Bear" (Mercury MG 20592). Personnel : Grady Martin, guitar ;
Bob Moore, bass ; Buddy Harman, drums ; Floyd Cramer or Hargus "Pig"
Robbins, piano ; Boots Randolph, sax ; The Anita Kerr Singers, vocal chorus.
Plus an unidentified string section. Produced by Bill Hall at Bradley Studio in 
Nashville.
 
March 16, 1960 : In London, CLIFF RICHARD records two tracks for the LP
"Me and My Shadows" (Columbia SX 1261) : "Evergreen Tree" and "You're
Just the One To Do It", as well as "Thinking of Our Love", the later B-side of
"Nine Times Out of Ten" (Columbia DB 4506, September). On March 25
these are followed by "Please Don't Tease" (Columbia DB 4479, June) and
"Tell Me", also for the "Me and My Shadows LP". Producer : Norrie Paramor.
 
March 20, 1960 : Fresh out of the US Army, ELVIS PRESLEY is rushed
into RCA Studio B in Nashville to record "Make Me Know It" and "Soldier
Boy" for the LP "Elvis Is Back" (RCA LPM 2231). In most countries outside
the USA, "Make Me Know It" will be released as the B-side of "It's Now Or
Never". On March 21, Elvis records his new single - with advance orders of
over 1,000,000 -  "Stuck On You"/"Fame and Fortune" (RCA 47-7740, rush
released before the end of the month) and "A Mess of Blues" (the US B-side
of "It's Now Or Never", RCA 47-7777) and "It Feels So Right" (for "Elvis Is 
Back"). Production by Steve Sholes and Chet Atkins. Engineer : Bill Porter.

March 25, 1960 : Under the guidance of producer Don Law, CARL PERKINS 
records three tracks in Nashville :  "L-O-V-E-V-I-L-L-E"/"Too Much For A Man
To Understand" (Columbia 41651, April) and "Just For You", which will become
the B-side of "Honey 'Cause I Love You" (Columbia 41825) in October.
 
March 26, 1960 : At RCA Studio in Nashville, ROY ORBISON records his 
next single, "Only the Lonely"/"Here Comes That Song Again" (Monument 
421, May), plus "Blue Avenue", a track for Roy's first LP, "Lonely and Blue" 
(Monument SM 14002). Personnel: Harold Bradley and Hank Garland, guitars ;
Bob Moore, bass ; Buddy Harman, drums ; Floyd Cramer, piano ; Boots 
Randolph, sax ; 5 violins ; Joe Melson and the Anita Kerr Singers, vocal 
chorus. Produced by Fred Foster.
 
March 27, 1960 : BRENDA LEE is back at Bradley Studio in Nashville.
First recorded is the Jerry Reed composition "That's All You Gotta Do"
(Decca 31093, May), followed by a first attempt at "I Want To Be Wanted" 
(unreleased until the Bear Family box-set). "Just a Little" ends up on the
B-side of the second version of "I Want To Be Wanted" (Decca 31149, 
September). "Build a Big Fence" is saved for EP release (Decca ED 2702)
until 1961.
On the next day, Brenda records six songs. Five of them will appear on
Brenda's second LP, simply titled "Brenda Lee" (Decca DL 4039), issued
on August 1 : "Be My Love Again", "Wee Wee Willie", new versions of
"Jambalaya" and "Dynamite" (previously recorded by Brenda in 1956-57)
and "I'm Sorry". Decca had its reservations about "I'm Sorry" : too mature
for a 15-year old. That's why it was released as the B-side of "That's All
You Gotta Do". The sixth track, "Love and Learn", appears on Brenda's
third LP ("This Is Brenda", Decca DL 4082) in October.

March 30, 1960 : In Los Angeles, THE CHAMPS, now with Johnny Meeks, 
record their next single, "The Little Matador"/"Red Eye" (Challenge 59076), 
for release on April 18.
 
On the next day, Thursday March 31, 1960, HANK BALLARD and the
Midnighters lay down "Finger Poppin' Time" in Cincinnati, for release in
May on King 5341.
 
March 1960, unknown date : DALE HAWKINS records his new single, "Every
Little Girl"/"Poor Little Rhode Island" (Checker 944). The third track from this 
session, "Convicted" stays in the can until the release of the "Rock 'n' Roll 
Tornado" CD (Ace 693) in 1998. Roy Buchanan plays guitar ; other details 
unknown.
