IN THE CAN : APRIL 1962
April 3, 1962 : THE EVERLY BROTHERS lay down another version
of "Little Hollywood Girl" in Nashville (RCA Studio), after having
recorded the song in Hollywood three days earlier. This Nashville
version is available on the "From Nashville To Hollywood" CD. Harold
Bradley plays guitar, Buddy Harman drums, more details unknown.
The next day, April 4, they record "How Can I Meet Her" (the new
single, Warner Bros 5273, late April) and "Burma Shave", first issued
in 1977 on "The New Album" (UK). Personnel includes Chet Atkins on
guitar and Walter Haynes on steel guitar this time.
April 3, 1962 : Second OKeh session for DR. FEELGOOD and the
Interns. Four tracks are recorded for the LP "Doctor Feelgood"
(OKeh OKS-14101), which will be released in June. "What's Up
Doc" (OKeh 7156) and "Bald-Headed Lena" (OKeh 7167) will also
come out as singles, in May 1962 and January 1963 respectively.
The other two tracks are "I'll Give You Anything" and "Love Is
Amazing". Personnel : Willie Perryman (Dr. Feelgood), vocals,
piano ; Roy Lee Johnson, guitar ; Curtis Smith, guitar ; Beverly
Watkins, guitar ; Long John Hobbs, bass ; Bobby Lee Tuggle,
drums ; Boots Randolph, sax. Produced by Don Law at Columbia
Studio (formerly Bradley Studio) in Nashville.
April 4, 1962 : SOLOMON BURKE records five tracks for the LP
"Solomon Burke's Greatest Hits" (Atlantic LP 8067, October), in
New York City. Of these, "Down In the Valley" and "I'm Hanging Up
My Heart For You" are selected for the next single (Atlantic 2147,
May). "Looking For My Baby" is released as a single in June
1964 (Atlantic 2241). The other two songs are "Baby I Wanna Be
Loved" and "Gotta Travel On". Backing includes King Curtis and
Buddy Lucas on tenor sax, Bucky Pizzarelli and Jimmy Spruill on
guitar and Panama Francis on drums. Arranged and conducted by
Teacho Wiltshire, produced by Jerry Wexler.
April 4, 1962 : CLIFF RICHARD and the Shadows record "For You
For Me", first issued on the EP "Holiday Carnival" in May 1963
(Columbia ESG 7892) and "I''m Walking the Blues", a track for the
LP "32 Minutes And 17 Seconds With Cliff Richard" (Columbia SX
1431, October). Without Cliff, THE SHADOWS record the narration
"What A Lovely Tune", which will be issued as the B-side of "Guitar
Tango" (Columbia DB 4870) in July. Produced by Norrie Paramor at
Abbey Road Studios in London.
Tuesday, April 10, 1962 : At Nashville's Columbia Studio, MARTY
ROBBINS records two future number ones on the country charts :
"Devil Woman" (Columbia 42486, July) and "Ruby Ann" (Columbia
42614, November). Also recorded is "My Wonderful One" for the LP
"Hawaii's Calling Me" (Columbia CS-8840, June 1963). Backing by
Grady Martin and Jack Pruett (guitars), Jerry Byrd (bass), Bill Pursell
(piano) and Louis Dunn (drums). Produced by Don Law and Frank Jones.
April 10, 1962 : At the Sun Studio (639 Madison Avenue, Memphis)
FRANK FROST and the Night Hawks record a total of 27 songs, 15
of them unreleased. The other twelve are released on Phillips Inter-
national LP 1975 under the title "Hey Boss Man". The Night Hawks
are Jack Johnson (guitar) and Sam Carr (drums). Frost himself takes
care of the vocals and plays harmonica and occasionally guitar.

April 14, 1962 : Final Imperial session for FATS DOMINO, who has
been with the label since 1949. Two singles are the result : "Dance
With Mr. Domino"/"Nothing New" (Imperial 5863, September) and
"Hum Diddy Doo"/"Those Eyes" (Imperial 5909, February 1963).
All four are also released on Imperial LP 9208 ("Just Domino",
September), as is the 5th track from this session, "I Want To Go
Home". Personnel : Fats Domino, vocals, piano ; Roy Montrell,
guitar ; Cornelius Coleman, drums ; Dave Bartholomew, trumpet,
producer ; Lee Allen, Herb Hardesty and Buddy Hagans, tenor
saxes ; Clarence Ford, baritone sax ; Unknown, bass.

April 16, 1962 : THE MARCELS record five tracks in New York
City, produced by Stu Phillips. "That Old Black Magic"/"Don't
Turn Your Back On Me" is released on Colpix 683 in March 1963.
"Give Me Back Your Love" will become the B-side of "I Wanna Be
the Leader" (recorded in the summer of 1962) in May 1963 (Colpix
687). "Tell Them About It" and "Baby Where Y'Been" were first
issued in 1993 on "The Marcels : The Complete Colpix Sessions"
(Sequel NED CD 264, 2-CD set).
April 17, 1962 : ROY ORBISON is in RCA's Nashville studio to
record his next single, "The Crowd"/"Mama" (Monument 461),
for release in May. Session personnel : Harold Bradley and Ray
Edenton, guitars ; Bob Moore, bass / leader ; Buddy Harman,
drums ; Floyd Cramer, piano ; Boots Randolph, sax, plus a
string section. Produced by Fred Foster.
April 19, 1962 : First Capitol session for the BEACH BOYS, at
Capitol Studios in Hollywood. Recorded are "Surfin' Safari", "409"
and "Lonely Sea", all three of which are overdubbed on June 13,
1962, which is usually mentioned as the recording date. "Surfin'
Safari"/"409" is issued in July on Capitol 4777. "Lonely Sea"
gets a place on the "Surfin' USA" LP (Capitol T 1890), which is
released on March 27, 1963. Produced by Nik Venet.
April 23, 1962 : JOHNNY CASH records two tracks in Hollywood,
at Columbia Studio. "Bonanza" is issued on Columbia 42512 in
August, "Shamrock Doesn't Grow in California" stays in the can
until its release on Bear Family BFX 15016 in 1978 (LP "The
Unissued Johnny Cash"). Personnel : Johnny Cash, vocal / guitar ;
Marshall Grant, bass ; Luther Perkins, electric guitar ; Johnny
Western, guitar ; W.S. Holland, drums ; The Jack Halloran Singers,
vocal group. Produced by Don Law and Frank Jones.
On April 18, Cash had recorded two duets with Lorne Greene at
the same studio : "Shifting Whispering Sands" and "The Place
Where I Worship". Due to objections raised by Lorne Greene's
label, RCA, these have never been issued.
April 24, 1962 : A Nashville session for DALE HAWKINS. "Women -
That's What Happening"/"With A Feeling" is issued on Atlantic 2150
in June. "A Fool In Love" remains unissued until this day. Larry Taylor
plays guitar, more details unknown. Produced by Bob Crewe.
April 24, 1962 : In Nashville, FLOYD CRAMER records "Java" (and
probably a few other tracks), for release on RCA 8116 in November.

April 26, 1962 : SAM COOKE is at RCA Studio 1 in Hollywood to
record his next single, "Having A Party"/"Bring It On Home To Me"
(RCA 8036, June). The second vocalist on "Bring It" is Lou Rawls.
Session men include Tommy Tedesco (guitar), Ray Pohlman (bass),
Ernie Freeman (piano) and Frank Capp (drums). Produced by Hugo &
Luigi, arranged and conducted by Rene Hall.
Thursday, April 26, 1962 : WANDA JACKSON lays downs four tracks
at Columbia Studio in Nashville, all released as singles : "The Greatest
Actor"/"You Bug Me Bad" (Capitol 4833, September), "One Teardrop
At A Time" (Capitol 4884, December) and "To Tell You the Truth"
(Capitol 5142, February 1964). Produced by Ken Nelson.
April 26, 1962 : JOHN D. LOUDERMILK records four tracks for the
LP "12 Sides Of John D. Loudermilk" (RCA LPM 2539, August), in
Nashville (RCA Studio). "Oh How Sad" (RCA 8054, June) and
"Angela Jones" (RCA 8101, October) are also released as singles.
The other two are "The Bully Of the Beach" and "Big Daddy".
Personnel : John D. Loudermilk, vocals / guitar ; Joe Tanner, banjo ;
Jimmy Isbell, drums ; Henry Strzelecki, bass ; Norro Wilson, harp-

April 28, 1962 : In Memphis, FRANK FROST records the single
"Jelly Roll King"/"Crawlback" for release on Phillips International
3578 in June. Personnel : Frank Frost, vocals, harmonica ; Jack
Johnson, guitar ; Roland Janes, guitar ; Sam Carr, drums.
April 1962, unknown date : LAZY LESTER records six tracks in
Crowley, Louisiana. The session yields two singles : "If You Think
I've Lost You"/"I'm So Tired" (Excello 2219, July) and "Lonesome
Highway Blues"/"I Made Up My Mind" (Excello 2230, March 1963).
The other two tracks, "Ain't Nothin' In This World" and "Bloodstains"
are eventually released on two different Flyright LP's (UK) in 1977
and 1979. Personnel : Lazy Lester, vocals, harmonica ; Al Foreman,
guitar ; Merton Thibodeaux, piano ; Bobby McBride, bass ; Austin
Broussard, drums ; Sylvester Buckley, harmonica on some tracks.
