Small introduction for people outside The Netherlands (the rest of this site is in Dutch):
I'm living in the most south situated county (province) of The Netherlands called Limburg, between Belgium and Germany. It's part of The Netherlands since 1839. We have our own "national" anthem (hymn), we are very proud of: "het bronsgroen eikenhout" (the bronze-green oak) referring to the fabulous landscape with lots of woods, meadowlands and most remarkable: hills (we are the onliest part of The Netherlands having hills, the rest is flat (that's why Netherlands in Dutch is "Nederland", because "neder" means "flat")).
For decades Limburg has been associated with coalmines (which have been closed in the seventies): Oranje Nassau 1, Oranje Nassau 2, Oranje Nassau 3, Oranje Nassau 4 (all Heerlen and surroundings), Emma (Hoensbroek, nowadays part of Heerlen), Dominiale and Willem Sophie (both Kerkrade), Laura and Julia (both Eygelshoven, nowadays part of Kerkrade), Wilhelmina (Terwinselen, part of Kerkrade), Hendrik (Brunssum), Maurits (Geleen). On the map below Kerkrade (not mentioned) is situated directly under Heerlen.
Most people worked in the coalmines and related companies. It's in this unique Dutch environment in which the rock & roll bands here in the south arose.
