FEEDING FOR THE KAKARIKI
The common food for the Kakariki is parakeet seed which is also provided to
cockatiels. This parakeet seed contains all the necessary ingredients including
sun flower seeds. Kakariki’s are crazy about these seeds. But be careful not to
feed only sun flower seeds, for it is commonly known that birds will become a
bit fat if they eat to much sun flower seeds.
You will notice that they will pick those first from the food and after that eat the rest. The birds also like fruit and vegetables very much. This can be all kind of fruits and lettuce.
But do not put Mango and Avocado on the menu, for those
are apparently not good for these birds.
Also you can give the birds egg food. I myself give them egg food of the brand
Orlux. This egg food contains all kind of fruits and dried insects.
Of course one can give seedlings before and during the breeding season. But be careful with this also, since it spoils very quick.
What I read on my forum as well ( http://hvgool-kakarikie.nl/kakarikiforum ) is that the kakariki also adores berries and maize.
It seems that one can put the maize with peel completely in the cage and the kakariki will take care of obtaining the kernel (seems to me that is beautiful to look at)
