POSSIBLE PROBLEMS DURING THE KAKARIKI BREED

Here will be placed some tips which you can consult if you if you should get problems with the breed with the kakariki.

Of course it could always happen that some problems occur during the breed with the kakariki and through the years all kind of tricks have been made up to conquer these little problems.

This all has happened, however, as a result of problems at other types but it generally works also with the kakariki.

Problem 1 : Female cq male destroys the eggs.

Solution    : Give this couple fake eggs on which they can put their aggression.

You will see that they soon discover that the eggs can not destroyed and will leave their own eggs in peace once you put them back in the nest box.

Problem 2:   Female sits on complete infertile breed.

Solution    :   If you have a couple who started their breed about the same time and

they have fertile eggs, put 1 or 2 of these eggs with the other female, so  she can finish her breed in a normal way.

This is also better for the female.

Problem 3 :   Female or male dies suddenly.

Solution     :   If the male dies than there is not such a big a problem, for the female will take this task on her.

However, when the female dies you will have a bigger problem. You can change to hand feed or you can place the young birds with an other couple what has also young of approximately same the age.

Problem 4 :   Parent birds attack their young, but the young don’t eat independent yet.

Solution    :  Take away the young and give hand feed for a few days. Besides that supply of mooring rope millet and egg food, so that the young can scratch and pick some of that here and there.

Place a wooden wall which gives the young an opportunity to crawl away, or place a little cage in which you put the birds so that they still can be fed by the parents through the chicken wire.

Problem 5  : The female does not proceed to brood.

Solution     : Take away the female  and wait to start to brood with her, for she is not yet ready to brood.

Problem 6 : The young die although their crop is full.

Solution     : There is probably been supplied bad food by the parent birds (think about bad egg food or bread soaked in milk or they have maggots.

Problem 7  : The female lays constant infertile eggs.

Solution     :  The two birds are both female. Replace one of the birds. Close down the opening of the nest box. By the time the female has opened it the male will have had enough time to approach her.

The couple doesn’t get along. Replace either male of female.

The fertilisation can’t take place due to loose sticks as a result the female does not have sufficient grip during the fertilisation.
