Western Yugur Bawdiness Purged

 

A small part of Malov's Western Yugur materials, which he collected in the early 1910s, was first published in Russian translation in his series of articles in the journal Zhivaja Starina between 1912 and 1914. When finally his original language materials were published in 1967, a few items from the earlier publications had been purged, apparently because they were considered risqué or obscene.
      The purged materials consist of one tale, one proverb, and one riddle, whose answer was written in Latin. The original Western Yugur versions have remained unpublished so far, and the translations presented here are from the Russian.

• The purged proverb:
  If one eats radish, one needs salt; if one sleeps at night, one needs a girl.
 
 

• The purged riddle:
  If a girl sees it, she does not grab it;
  If a women sees it, she grabs it;
  If a girl sees it, she is frightened;
  If a women sees it, she is not frightened:
  It is a thing she finds herself with time and again.
