Hi! Some WebPages about making your own diesel for your car, I copied two WebPages onto this webpage, plus collected some addresses. So i wrote non of the following myself!

Making Biodiesel Dr. Pepper Style.
Biodiesel recipe from Mike Pelly.

The ingredients are:
Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) or lye
Methanol (CH3OH)
And, of course, Veggie oil (lots of H’s C’s and O’s)
In my case I distill my glycerin so I use 25% methanol by volume, or 250ml per liter of oil. I have made fuel using as little as 16% methanol by volume but the reaction only goes to about 90% completion making for a more viscous fuel. If I were to live only in summer-like climates this would be fine and the cheapest method. Using 25% methanol yields a 98% complete reaction or better.
Into the methanol goes the catalyst, in this case lye. 3.5 grams of lye per liter of virgin oil is the starting point. Now, depending on how much the oil has been used I will need to add more. My source is very consistent, so I can count on oil that is about 5 grams per liter once it’s all mixed together. The way to tell is to either do a titration on the oil to find out how much more lye is needed, or to simply make small batches (a liter or less) using progressively higher amounts of catalyst until a good reaction occurs.
A good reaction will have two distinct layers: A golden translucent layer on top and a dark brown opaque layer on the bottom. Pics to follow. The trick is to use the amount that produces a good separation but not a cloudy top layer. This may require several batches with ¼ gram differences to determine. It is also important to test the oil every time until its quality can be assured. I no longer titrate, but that is because I have been getting the same oil since April of 2000 and can tell by looking at it how much lye it needs.
Wanna make more than one liter? Easy, just multiply everything by the number liters of oil. I use 165 liters of oil titrating at 5 grams per liter. So that’s 165*5g lye=825 g of lye (add a few grams more to make up for what clings to containers). And 165*250ml (or .25 liters)=41.25 liters of methanol.
Once I have all of the ingredients measured I mix in the lye into the methanol. This step requires caution as the mixed base is very strong and the fumes are toxic. After the NaOH is completely dissolved the whole mixture is added to the veggie oil and mixed again for up to a half an hour. I let this settle for at least 6 hours and then drain the glycerin. The remainder is allowed to settle for a few days and then drained again. Then it is transferred to storage.
Finally, NaOH can be replaced by potassium-hydroxide (KOH) and the methanol can be replaced by ethanol, but the reaction is much less forgiving of error and requires more of each.

INTRODUCTION WARNING Now that I have managed to scare you, just realize that Methanol is the
fuel used in most model airplanes. In the USA methanol is available in small
quantities as HEET brand fuel line antifreeze (Yellow bottle) MATERIALS REQUIRED EQUIPMENT REQUIRED THE TECHNIQUE OIL PREPERATION Once the water is gone (Oil becomes calm and there is no more spitting and popping) let the oil cool. If you are using new oil from the bottle it should have no water in it, so in this case just heat to 55deg c when you are ready to mix. MAKING THE METHOXIDE While the oil is cooling mix your methanol and NaOH(lye) to form the
methoxide. Use 250ml of methanol. This is more methanol than most people use
but will help insure a successful first batch. NaOH and Methanol do not readily mix, so if you are doing it by hand a bit of time and patience is required. Don't sniff the fumes. CARTRIDGE RESPIRATORS DO NOT WORK WITH METHANOL For quickest mixing, start with the methanol at JUST body temp (not warm). As you mix, the temp will increase substantially. This is normal. Make sure ALL the NaOH (lye) is disolved. This may take 10 minutes or more. Hand mixing can be accomplished using a spoon to stir/crush the NaOH granules; OR placing methanol/NaOH in a glass bottle with a top and shaking/ swirling until ALL NaOH is disolved. After ALL the NaOH has disolved, top up to 250ml with fresh methanol, as there may be some evaporation during mixing. MAKING THE BIODIESEL! Now place the bottle on a table and observe the oil change colour from a
"Chocolate milk to a rich, darker brown." Within an hour, most of the glycerine will be settled out. This is
referred to as seperation. You should now have a bottle containing lighter coloured biodiesel on top
of a layer of darker glycerine. The biodiesel will be very cloudy, and it
will take a day or two more for it to clear. If it does not work out come onto the forum and see if anyone can figure out what went wrong. And that is all there is to it. Only a little magic is involved. ROYALTIES ADDITIONAL COMMENTS CARTRIDGE RESPIRATORS DO NOT WORK WITH METHANOL Again, these are dangerous chemicals and care is necessary, especially if there are children in your home. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR ACTIONS AND YOUR SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF EVERYONE AROUND YOU. I have Up-Sized the Dr Pepper technique by using a 20 litre plastic drum
(longish and skinny) and make 14 litre batches. I simply lay the drum on a
wooden "cradle" and place the center of the cradle on a pipe and rock back
and forth for 3 or 4 minutes. Addendum: Now that you have a Litre of Finest biodiesel you will probably wish to wash it and this is quite easily accomplished using the World Famous Dr Pepper Wash Technique (Pat Pend) |
