Linux Multimedia Center

The purpose of my multimedia center is to provide a complete multimedia solution in my living room and other rooms in my house.
This means it should be able to do the following :
Play Live TV (with time shifting function)
Play DVD and other video formats at high quality
    Play audio (CD & MP3)
Have remote control for ease of use.
Be able to play the media files from a network
    Have good quality.
Movies should be viewable on every TV set in my house.
My choice of OS was Linux because of the ability to do my own changes to the code in case necessary (I don't like being dependant on Microsoft).

All software discussed on these pages is available free of charge on the net.

On my pages you'll find the configuration files for all the software that I use as an example.
These pages are not mean as a full guide to set up your HTPC, they are mainly meant to show the possibilities of Linux as a multimedia center.
The focus will be on presenting global information that is needed for someone to set up such a system themselves. In that sense I refer sometimes to Windows as I think my pages may be specially interesting to users migrating from Windows to Linux.
Where necessary, links will be provided to pages for more in-depth documentation or helpful utilities.
In case you're not familiar with Linux, prepare to do some reading in order to get everything working. My pages are meant as a starting point and should give you a general impression about Linux's structure and how things work in Linux compared to Windows.
I've set up one page specially for Windows users migrating to Linux in order to show some differences between Linux and Windows that may form bottlenecks to the first time Linux user.
