Quick DSP Guide for musicians
(using ProFX only)
(by Lex Nahumury)
- Don't use kX Mixer.
- Don't use the default DSP setup.
- Clear the DSP and learn to build your own setup.
- Work solely in the DSP window.
Every audio signal goes through the DSP. ...There
is NO way around it..!
There are only 4 Audio Signal Types just as
with any other soundcard;
1. Input signals;
These are the REAL inputs on your card.
Analog input signals like; Line-In, Mic, AUX etc. and digital
inputs like SPDIF.
These signals enter the DSP through [Src]
2. Playback signals
These are all audio signals played back by your computer.
Playback from Mediaplayer, Cubase, Sonar, MIDI SoundFonts etc.
These signals enter the DSP through [Src]
3. Recording signals
These are the signals going to the computer to get recorded.
WINMM and ASIO recording.
These signals exit the DSP through [Asio] or [kxlt]
4. Output signals
These are the REAL outputs on your card.
Analog outputs like front/rear, lfe/center speakers, and digital
outputs like SPDIF.
These signals exit the DSP through [kxlt]
All these signals have to go through the DSP if you want to use
them..!
The DSP acts like a "switch board" to route any of
these signals anywhere *you* want.

As you can see; the DSP "sits" between everything.
No matter what software program you use, you actualy always;
1. (live) input *into* the
DSP.
2. playback *into* the DSP.
3. record *from* the DSP.
4. output *from* the DSP.
Explanation what happens in the above example DSP setup;
1. An analog (live) signal from Line-In *enters* the DSP via a
renamed [Src] set to Line-In. It then goes;
-to a Mixer for monitoring,
-to WINMM Recording in case you want to record it with a non-ASIO
program.
-to ASIO Recording if you want to record it with an ASIO program
like Cubase.
2. The computer plays back through a renamed [Src] set to
FXBus0/1.
It goes to the Mixer and then straight to the Front or Rear
speaker output via [k1lt].
This is a basic 'full duplex' setup in which you can record a
live input while playing back a previous recording.
