Quirks and Features

The Bad
  • Doesn't work with the Logitech Rally steering wheel.
  • There doesn't seem to be any way to sort the names in the Garage list.
  • You have to get into a car to sell it, which leaves you with no selected car after it's sold.
  • Inconsistent HP ratings (Dealer specs and Garage specs often differ).
  • Inconsistent car names used; the name at the bottom right of the screen is usually different than the name used elsewhere (e.g., car view, lists, and race results).
The Good
  • Ability to manually load/save from/to MC1 or MC2.
  • Includes a Trade feature for buying cars from other gamesaves.
  • Most road cars can be race-modified (see PartsLineUp>Others>RacingModification at the car's manufacturer).

Car List

According to the box, there are over 290 licensed cars in this sim. Below is a partial list that includes only the ones I've seen so far. Cars marked with an asterisk (*) are race cars.

For the Acquire column, 'D' means that the car can be bought from a Dealer, and 'P' means that the car can be won as a Prize. The letter following 'D:' will either be N (New), U (Used), or S (Special). The letter following 'P:' will either be G (GT League), S (Special Event),E (Endurance), or L (License). See the
Events List for more info.

Recommended Cars

For some events, there may be better choices than the ones listed below. For the GT Cup and events that only require a B license, for instance, it's assumed that you don't yet have an eligible race car; if you do have one, use that instead. For all other events, the cars listed are just the ones that I've tested and found to be okay so far. Where no specific model is specified, it means that any will do (e.g., "TVR Grifith" means you can use either the 4.0 or 500, "Chrysler Dodge Viper" means you can use either the GTS or RT/10).

Getting Started

Arcade Mode - Single Race

If you're completely new to the Gran Turismo series, you may want to start in Arcade mode to familiarize yourself with the cars and tracks before moving on to Gran Turismo mode. Otherwise, see Gran Turismo Mode - First Time below.
  • In Arcade Single Race, there are 3 difficulty levels: Easy, Normal, and Hard. And there are 3 classes of cars: Class A, Class B, and Class C.
  • There are initially 4 tracks available (the first row in the table below). Completing one of those tracks will unlock the track listed in the second row.
    1. High Speed Ring2. Trial Mountain3. Grand Valley East4. Clubman Stage R5
    5. Autumn Ring6. Deep Forest7. Special Stage R58. Grand Valley
  • Initially, only 6 manufacturers (Aston Martin, Chevrolet, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, and Nissan) are available. Each time you complete one of the initially-locked tracks, a new manufacturer (Toyota, Subaru, Chrysler, or TVR) will become available. Cars from the initially-locked manufacturers are marked with an asterisk (*) below.

  • Track completion is accomplished by winning in all 3 classes (A, B, and C). The difficulty level (Easy, Normal, or Hard) doesn't matter for track completion. Your main goal should be to gain some experience with the cars and tracks.
  • Once you've unlocked all of the cars and tracks, you can either move on to Gran Turismo mode or stay in Arcade Single Race mode to get some more practice. Completing all 8 tracks in Normal difficulty level will unlock a credits video. Completing all 8 tracks in Hard difficulty level will unlock the Hi-Res GT mode which includes the Clubman Stage Route 5, Special Stage Route 5, and Special Stage Route 11 tracks.

Gran Turismo Mode - First Time

The notes below describe one way to get started in Gran Turismo mode. If you already have a GT gamesave that includes some race cars and you just want to start a new gamesave, see Gran Turismo Mode - Subsequent Times below.
  1. The first time you start Gran Turismo mode, you have the choice of either buying a car from a Used Car lot and then getting your license(s) or getting your license(s) and then buying a car. For your first car, there are several to choose from. The list below includes a selection of cars that are capable of winning the Sunday Cup without any modifications. With enough upgrades and proper tuning, each of these should also be able to win its drive class event (FF, FR, or 4WD). A few of these are also eligible for the Lightweight event (check the list near the back of the Gran Turismo booklet).

If you're unfamiliar with the Gran Turismo series and you're unsure of which car to choose, I'd recommend buying one of the cars marked with an asterisk (*).
  2. Once you've bought a starter car, you're all set to do some racing. Even if you don't yet have any licenses, there are 5 races in Spot Race that you can try out if you're unfamiliar with those tracks. The prize for a win is Cr.1,000.
  3. Get your B license if you haven't already done so.
  4. Use your starter car to do the Sunday Cup in GT League. If you chose one of the cars listed above, it should be able to win without any upgrades. You can use the Sunday Cup as your current 'money-maker' until you're eligible for a better one.
  5. As you earn more credits, you can gradually upgrade your car to make it more competitive for any other events that it's eligible for. Alternatively, you could save your credits to buy a Nissan R33 Skyline GT-R and/or Chrysler Dodge Viper, both of which you'll need eventually. Note: if you decide to buy a Viper, be sure to keep it stock (unmodified).
  6. Get your A license if you haven't already done so.
  7. Once you have your A license, you're eligible to do some high-performance racing. But, you'll need a fully-upgraded Nissan R33 Skyline GT-R to get started. If you're low on credits, your best bet is to buy a Chrysler Dodge Viper and use it as a 'money-maker' in the Normal Car championship.
  8. Once you've earned enough credits to buy and upgrade a Nissan R33 Skyline GT-R, you can use it to win your first race car. The GT-R is eligible for the GT Cup, US v Japan, and UK v Japan; each of these awards a race car that can make it a lot easier to win other events.
  9. At some point, you'll want to start thinking about getting your IA License. To achieve this goal, the following may help:
    1. Buy a TVR Griffith 4.0 and get some practice at High Speed Ring, Grand Valley, Autumn Ring, and Special Stage Route 11.
    2. Once you feel comfortable in the Griffith, do the odd-numbered license tests.
    3. If you don't already have a Chrysler Dodge Viper, buy one now and get get some practice at Special Stage Route 5, Deep Forest, Trial Mountain, and Grand Valley Reverse.
    4. Once you feel comfortable in the Viper, do the even-numbered license tests.
  10. Once you have your IA license, you're all set to win the 3 endurance races and finish off any other championships that you haven't already done.

Gran Turismo Mode - Subsequent Times

If you already have a gamesave that includes some race cars, don't delete or overwrite it; instead, start a new gamesave on another memory card and use the old gamesave as a garage that you can buy cars from (using the Trade feature). Here's an alternative way to get started:
  1. Get your B, A, and IA licenses.
  2. Buy a car from a Used Car Lot (any car should do).
  3. Earn some credits by winning the Sunday Cup once or twice.
  4. Insert the memory card that includes your old gamesave in MC slot 2.
  5. Use the Trade feature to buy your favorite race car for 35K.
  6. At this stage, the rest is up to you. See also: Events List, Recommended Cars and Quick Ways To Earn Credits.
