Gran Turismo 4

Contents

Quirks and Features

The Bad
  • No Load option (saved game in slot 1 loads automatically on startup, but you can't load manually).
  • Switching memory cards won't work for backups (you need to use the PS2's Browser utility).
  • Takes up a huge amount of space on a memory card (1.5M; GT3 uses about 200K).
  • When selecting a car to drive, the game is saved even if AutoSave is off (resulting in lots of wear 'n' tear on the memory card).
  • When using the Trade feature, there's no way to view a car before you buy it. Also, the specs in the Trade list are for the car on the other memory card (which may have been upgraded), not the car that's bought.
  • No mileage info in garage list (you have to view the car to find out its mileage).
  • Garage gets sorted when list is displayed, and then re-sorted after viewing or deleting a car (a bit annoying when checking for duplicate colors).
  • RX-8 Concept II is available in 7 colors in Arcade mode, but only Yellow can be won with IB License.
  • The striped and non-striped Ford GT '05 appear to be the same car (same name, specs, and color icon in the Garage list) but are not eligible for the same events.
  • No night driving in 24-hour races (always daytime, and even the clouds stay the same).
  • No practice/qualifying for non-championship events (setup and testing have to be done elsewhere).
  • Pictures can be saved to USB, but only loaded back from MC1 or MC2.
The Good
  • Lots of new race cars, many of which are buyable.
  • Lots of new tracks, including 2 versions of the Le Mans circuit.
  • Ability to save 3 sets of settings for each car.
  • Wings can be bought for most road cars.
  • B-Spec mode allows you to share some of the driving with an AI teammate (handy for Endurance and other long races).
  • No licenses required to do races in B-Spec mode.
  • Optional 3x accelerated time in B-Spec Race Monitor.
  • Includes lots of events that don't require a license.
  • Mileage is reset when cars are bought via the Trade feature.
  • Garage can hold up to 1000 cars.
  • Single-Race series can be reset to re-win prize cars.
  • Quitting a race before you start no longer counts as a lost race.
  • Ability to take pictures of cars, with optional save to USB for PC viewing.

Complete Car List

For the Car column, cars marked with an asterisk (*) are race cars. Note that some cars may be listed differently than their in-game names; the Sauber Mercedes C9, for example, is listed under Mercedes-Benz and the Nismo cars are listed under Nissan. This was done to make it easier to know which manufacturer's Tuning Shop you'll need to go to for upgrades. In some cases, however, you may need to go elsewhere; the Sileighty, for example, is listed under Nissan but you'll need to go to Tuning Cars for upgrades. When in doubt, check for a flashing orange box on the Map.

Drv. is Drive, Asp. is Aspiration, BHP is Brake Horsepower, and PWR is Power-to-Weight Ratio. As usual with the Gran Turismo series, the info for BHP and PWR may vary depending on various conditions.

For the Acquire column, 'D' means that the car can be bought from a new car Dealer, 'U' means the car can be bought from one of the 3 Used car lots (1980's, Early 90's, or Late 90's), and 'P' means that the car can be won as a Prize. The XNN following 'P:' represents an
event.

For a list of some of the available colors, see the GameSaves page.

The Tracks

Track Areas

The Area column refers to the green/white icons on the Map in Gran Turismo Mode. In cases where you're not sure about a particular car, track, or car/track combination, you can use the track areas for practice and testing; they are especially useful for testing setups for endurance races.

The Events

In the first column of the lists below, the letter(s) in parentheses is the required license (-, B, A, IB, IA, or S). Any other restrictions will also be listed in this column. 'Tires' means that only sports or normal tires are allowed, 'Class' means that only normal sports/road cars are allowed (no race cars, no special cars), 'Make' means that only cars from a certain manufacturer are allowed, and 'Car' means that only a specific make/model is allowed. For events where 'Tires' is a restriction, you can often buy Sports tires for cars that don't already include them (e.g., race cars).

For the Races column, numbered races are part of a Championship while bullets denote Single Races. The number in parentheses is the number of laps unless it's in a time format followed by an 'H'.

For the Cars column, 'C' is Competition (the AI cars that make up the field), 'R' is Recommended (cars known to be competitive enough for the event), and 'P' is Prize (the car you'll acquire after winning the event). For Recommended cars, a preceding asterisk (*) means that the car can be used "as is" while a preceding caret (^) means that the car may need
maximum upgrades and proper tuning. Examples of Rn and Sn cars are:
Rn - Race Cars    Sn - Sports/Road Cars
R1  Polyphony, Top 12 LM cars, Chaparral, and other high-performance race cars  S1  Speed 12, Cien, Pagani, SLR McLaren, and other high-performance road cars
R2  JGTC cars, touring cars, rally cars, and other moderately-powered race cars  S2  NSX, stock Skyline GT-R, and other moderately-powered road cars
 R3  Low-powered and/or low-performance race cars  S3  Low-powered and/or low-performance road cars

The events have been split into the following groups:
Group 1

All of these events, except one, are initially available when you start Gran Turismo Mode. The exception is the Gran Turismo World Championship (B09) which is only unlocked when all other events in Beginner and Professional have been completed.

Special Conditions

These events are always open/unlocked. All of these, except Tsukuba Wet Circuit (G09, H09, and I09), are rally types of events held on either dirt, snow, or street courses. Where the Recommended car is "rally car", you can use any of your favorite rally cars or any car that can be fitted with dirt or snow tires. For the events that don't require dirt or snow tires (Umbria, Capri, George V, and Tsukuba), your best bet is to use the softest tires that you've bought for your car (ideally, Racing/Soft or Racing/Qualifying) since there is no tire wear in these events.

Gameplay

Getting Started - First Things First

There are several ways to get started in Gran Turismo 4, two of which are described below. A third way to get started is by reading both the
No-License and License ways, and then doing whichever steps suit you. But first, the initial steps for starting a new gamesave:
  1. Insert a memory card with enough free space. A GT4 gamesave requires 1.5M (1500K), so you'll need a memory card that has at least that much free space before starting GT4.
  2. Choose a language.
  3. Type a display name. This name will be shown in the top left corner on the Map page (the page you see when you start Gran Turismo Mode) and above the garage door on your Home page. As far as I can tell, there's no way to change the name later, so choose one that you're not likely to get tired of.
  4. Set your global options. Before going into Arcade Mode or Gran Turismo Mode, check Options and change as desired. You can turn off BGM (BackGround Music) in the Sound section, and change the units in the Units section. To minimize wear 'n' tear on your memory card, you can turn off Auto-save in the Misc section; just remember to save the game before shutting down the PS2.
  5. Exit the Options page. You now have two modes to choose from: Arcade Mode and Gran Turismo Mode. Arcade Mode includes Single Race where you can get a feel for some of the cars and tracks. Gran Turismo Mode is the career mode. If you're completely new to racing games in general, I'd recommend spending some time in Arcade Mode before moving on to Gran Turismo Mode. The rest of these notes are for Gran Turismo Mode, so skip these and come back later if you decide to go with Arcade Mode. Also, if you get stuck at any of the steps below, you can always switch back and forth to/from Arcade Mode whenever you want.

Getting Started - The No-License Way

These notes assume that you're eager to get started without having to get a license. If you have the time and patience, and/or you don't want to spend any credits on a car just yet, see
The License Way below.
  1. Buy your first car. There are 3 Used car lots on the Map: 1980's (SouthWest of Home), Early 90's (NorthEast of Home), and Late 90's (SouthEast of Home). The Used car line-ups change every 7 days and things like taking a license test, among other things, will advance the Day counter. Initially, you start with Cr.10,000. Although there are several choices within your budget, I'd recommend choosing one from the list below (or a similar car). These cars are available in Week1 (Day1-Day7) and are all capable of winning the Sunday Cup in either stock form or with very few upgrades. If you decide to go with the Honda Civic Type R, be sure to get the '98 and not the '97 version; the price is the same but the '98 has a bit more power.

Whenever you buy a used car, always remember to take it to GT Auto (just SouthWest of Home on the Map) and buy an Oil Change. It's well worth the Cr.50 since it increases the power of a used car by about 10% and is cheaper than any upgrade. For the Honda Civic Type R, you'll need to do a race first and change the oil after.
  2. Use your starter car in the Sunday Cup. Now that you have a car, you can go to Beginner Events (SouthEast of Home) and try the Sunday Cup. This is probably the only event that your starter car can win in its stock form, so use this event as your current 'money maker' (by repeatedly winning and selling the extra cars) until you have enough credits for upgrades. The prize for winning all 5 races is an Autobianchi A112 Abarth worth about Cr.8,000. Keep at least one for the next step. Remember to Clear the event records when restarting the event; otherwise, you'll miss out on the prize car.
  3. Use the Autobianchi in the Lightweight K Cup. Once you have about Cr.30,000 in the kitty, you can take your Autobianchi to Italy > Autobianchi > Tuning Shop and buy a Racing Exhaust, Racing Chip, Stage 2 Turbo, Sports/Soft tires, and 2 stages of Weight Reduction. Then, use it to win the Lightweight K Cup. The prize is a Ginetta G4 worth about Cr.10,000. You now have a new "money maker" that will earn you slightly more credits in slightly less time.
  4. Do the Alfa Romeo GTA Cup. For this, you'll need to save up about Cr.50,000 to buy an Alfa Romeo 147 GTA and another Cr.35,000 for upgrades (RC Exhaust, Stage2 NA Tuning, Racing chip, NOS, and FC Transmission). Tune it to taste, and then do the GTA Cup in Italy > Alfa Romeo > Event. The prize is a Giulia Sprint GTA 1600 worth about Cr.24,000. Once you're comfortable enough to easily win this event, you can use it as your new "money maker" to earn almost twice as much as the Lightweight K Cup in about the same amount of time.
  5. Do one or more drivetrain events. For the drivetrain events (FF, FR, 4WD, MR), you can use your starter car and any other cars that you've won or bought so far. Your cars should only need light or moderate upgrades for these events. For the FR Challenge, you can use a Ginetta if your starter car isn't an FR.
  6. Do the European 1000 Miles. (Note: This step can take up to 16 hours!). For the European 1000, you have several choices of cars to use, some of which are listed below. The cars in the first part of the list are prize cars that you should already have in your garage. If you don't like any of those, or if you want something that'll get you through the championship quicker, you can buy one of the other cars listed. Cars marked with an asterisk (*) can be fitted with a Wing from GT Auto.

Whichever car you choose, I'd recommend upgrading as much as you can afford. Once you've upgraded your car, I'd recommend doing some practice laps at Nurburgring, Opera, Monaco, and LeMans2. Then, once you feel reasonably comfortable with the car and tracks, you can enter the European 1000 Miles where you'll earn up to Cr.900,000. See More Notes and Basic Tuning for tips on how to win this event.
  7. Buy or win more cars for other events. Below is the complete list of events that you can do in A-Spec (Driver's Mode) that don't require a license.

For the events marked with one asterisk (*), you'll need to do some events in B-Spec (Director's Mode) to win an eligible car. For the Roadster 4 Hours, you'll need to reach 25% game completion to unlock the Endurance Events. As far as I can tell, it isn't possible to get past 11% in A-Spec alone without a license, so you'll need to do lots more B-Spec for the other 14%.
  8. Decide where to go from here. Once you've completed all of the events that you're eligible for, you basically have two choices:
    1. Continue without a license. Besides the events you've already done, you can also take your cars to various Track Areas shown as green/white icons on the Map. You won't earn any credits there (as a matter of fact, they cost Cr.5 to enter), but they give you a chance to test your cars and practice on any track of your choice.
    2. Or, get your licenses and become eligible for the other events in Gran Turismo Mode. This is the choice I'd recommend since there are many more cars and tracks that can be unlocked in Gran Turismo Mode that aren't yet available in Arcade Mode.

Getting Started - The License Way

These notes assume that you have a reasonable amount of time and patience, and/or you're already familiar with license tests from previous sims in the Gran Turismo series.
  1. Get your B and A licenses. Initially, you start with Cr.10,000. If you have a GT3 gamesave, you can use the Transfer feature (press [Start] on the Home>Status page) to add up to Cr.100,000 to the kitty. Although it may be tempting to buy a car and start racing, I'd recommend getting your B and A licenses first. The Licence Centre is located just below Home on the Map and there are 16 tests that need to be passed per license. You'll get a Volkswagen Lupo with your B license and a Pontiac Sunfire with your A license. If you have a GT4:Prologue gamesave that includes the Red level license, you can use the Transfer feature to obtain your B and A licenses; in which case, you won't get the cars but it'll save some time.
  2. Use the Sunfire to do the Sunday Cup. (Skip this step if you used the Transfer feature to obtain your B and A licenses). Since a stock Sunfire isn't competitive enough for any other events, just stay with the Sunday Cup in Beginner Events (just SouthEast of Home on the Map), for now. Winning all 5 races will earn you an Autobianchi A112 Abarth worth about Cr.8,000 if you sell it. You can use this event as your current "money maker" by repeatedly winning and selling the extra cars. Just remember to Clear the event records when restarting the event; otherwise, you'll miss out on the prize car. Once you've earned enough credits, you can either upgrade the Sunfire (about Cr.31,000 for a Racing exhaust, Stage 2 NA Tuning, Racing Chip, and 2 stages of Weight Reduction) and use it for the FF Challenge, or you can save your credits for the next step.
  3. Buy a multi-purpose car. (Skip this step if you'd rather win a car by doing license tests). At this stage, there are probably only a few events for the cars that you have so far, so it might be a good idea to buy a more useful one. The cars listed below may be worth considering; any of these is capable of winning a wide variety of events. Cars marked with an asterisk (*) are Used cars (subject to availability, and prices may vary). The cars in the second half of the list are probably only worth considering at a later stage.

Once you've bought a car, your main goal should be to get lots of practice and to learn any tracks that you don't already know. If you want to test your cars on particular tracks that aren't available in any of the the normal events, you can take them to the various Track Areas represented by green/white icons on the Map.
  4. Get your IB and IA licenses. If you skipped the last 2 steps and don't have a car yet, you'll need to get your IB and IA licenses before you can do the next step. If you already have some cars but don't yet know all of the tracks, you can skip this step for now and get your IB and IA licenses later; otherwise, get your IB and IA licenses now. You'll get a Nike One 2022 with your IB license and a Nismo 270R with your IA license.
  5. Do the Capri Rally in Special Conditions Easy. For this, you can use either the Nismo 270R (if you got your IA license) or a multi-purpose car from Step 3 (if you bought one). Once you've won the Toyota RSC Rally Raid Car, you can use it in the same event as your new "money maker", or you can use it to win better cars that, in turn, can be used to win even better cars.
  6. Strive for 25% game completion. Do the easy stuff first, and don't spend too much time on the harder events. The list below includes a selection of cars that are fairly easy to acquire, and any of these can serve as a "workhorse" to complete a fair percentage of events. Note: For a car that's listed as being useful for both B03 and B04, you'll need to install a Turbo kit to make it eligible for B04, or uninstall it for B03.

Once you reach 25% game completion, the Endurance races will become available.
  7. Win one or more high-end cars. For your first high-end car, do the El Capitan 200 Miles (J15) using any car from the list in the previous step. Once you have the Toyota 88C-V, you can use it to win other high-end cars (either now or later). Any of these can be used for events where a "Top 12 LM" car is recommended.

  8. Strive for 50% game completion. Do more of the easy stuff and, again, don't spend too much time on the harder events. Once you reach 50% game completion, you'll get a Jaguar XJR-9 LM Race Car. You can use that, plus any other high-end cars that you won in the last step, to go back and do some of the previously-skipped harder stuff.
  9. Do the Driving Missions. The Driving Missions, although numbered, don't necessarily have to be done in order. If you just wanted the Nissan R89C, for instance, you could just do Mission 30-34 and skip the rest. Driving Missions are more like License tests than the normal events. Unlike License tests, however, these do count towards game completion (about 6%, I think). The list below may be useful if you want to practice beforehand. When using a car from your garage, be sure to uninstall all upgrades so that practice conditions are as close as possible to the Driving Mission conditions. The easiest way to unmodify a car is by using an unused settings preset (Set A, B, or C).

Getting Started - More Notes

These are just a few more notes that may be useful.

"Money Makers"

The events below can be used to earn a fair amount of credits in a fairly short time. L is the license required to do the event in A-Spec. Credits is the approximate amount if all of the races are won and the prize car is sold. The times are for A-Spec; you can shorten these (all except G02 and H09) to about a third in B-Spec using the Race Monitor 3x accelerator.

Basic Tuning

The notes below are just very basic ways to make a car a bit more competitive. You can install/uninstall parts or change settings by pressing the Setting icon (red toolbox) in a Race Menu, or by pressing [Start] on your Home page.

Car Collecting

These notes are meant to save you some time if you're trying to get a prize car in a certain color, or if your goal is to collect all colors of a prize car. You'll need up to 3 memory cards and, to avoid confusion, these should be clearly labeled '1', '2', and '3'. If you're collecting all colors, you'll also need to make sure that your main gamesave (the one that will hold your car collection) has enough credits to buy all of the available colors of the car you want.

Le Mans 24 Hours

These notes are meant as a general guide for the Le Mans (Circuit de la Sarthe) 24-hour endurance races. The "Top 12 LM Cars" list may be helpful in choosing a car, and "AI Competition" may be helpful in planning your strategy. The latter may also give you an idea of how well the computer will do in its stints when you switch to B-Spec mode.

Tire Wear

When it comes to endurance races, speed is not the only issue. If you find that your tires wear too quickly, you can try using more traction control (by increasing the TCS setting), or you can try using wider gears (by increasing the auto-gear setting). But, keep in mind that there are trade-offs... a higher TCS will sacrifice speed, and wider gears will sacrifice acceleration. Although the traction control and auto-gear settings are probably the easiest ways to deal with tire wear, the best (and probably hardest) way is to learn to avoid punching the gas pedal. Smooth acceleration means less wheel spin, which equates to less tire wear. Also, it's probably a good idea to choose a car that you're comfortable with (one that you can easily keep under control), since hitting things or going off the track will cause excessive tire wear.

Ideally, your tires should last as long as your fuel, but no longer than that. If your tires do last longer, it means you can probably afford to go with faster settings. On the other hand, if you come in for tires and find that you still have lots of fuel left, it means you can probably afford to go out with less. To find out how much you need for a stint, take a look at your fuel gauge as soon as you reach your pit box (make sure you check it before refueling starts). Then, subtract that amount from the full tank. For example, say you have 10 liters left and your tank holds 80. When the fuel gauge hits 70, press the X button to stop refueling. Going out with less fuel means faster pitstops, and the reduced weight (from carrying less fuel) means faster lap times and less tire wear.

B-Spec Mode

For the longer endurance races, it's nice to have co-drivers to share some of the driving. Ideally, the drivers will have equal skills and do similar lap times. However, if you plan to use B-Spec mode (as opposed to having human co-drivers), there are some things to keep in mind. For one thing, the computer's lap times will usually be slower and, for another, the computer might not pass other cars as quickly as it should. Another thing to keep in mind is that, when the computer runs in unattended B-Spec mode, pitstops take longer because there's a 5-second pause at your pitbox (apparently to give you enough time to switch to A-Spec or change settings) before the pitcrew actually does anything. These may not be important issues if your car is fast enough, but they're definitely worth considering if you choose a car that's less competitive. In the latter case, it's probably a good idea to test the car in B-Spec mode before entering a long endurance race.

Testing a car in B-Spec mode will tell you what the computer's weaknesses are. If the computer makes mistakes because of worn tires, you can try sending it out with less fuel (to force a shorter stint), or you can try reducing the pace. If the computer's poor passing skills are a problem, a good strategy may be to do the stints that have heavy traffic yourself and let the computer do the stints with less traffic. Also, if you've tuned your car and you notice that the computer doesn't drive it as well as you'd expect, you may need to revert to settings that are more standard; it appears that the computer can sometimes have a hard time when the settings have been heavily tweaked.

Race Preparation

Since an endurance race can take up to 24 hours, it's probably a good idea to check a few things beforehand.
Oil. If you're using a car that has any kind of mileage on it, an oil change will give you some extra horsepower.
Tires. Check to make sure that you've bought all of the compounds (soft, hard, etc) that you might need, and be sure to mount the right type (sports or racing) before starting the race.
Body Rigidity Refresher Plan. Check to see if this upgrade is buyable. If it is, buying it may improve the car's handling.

Which Car?

If you're having a hard time deciding which car to use for the Le Mans 24-hr race, I'd recommend the Pescarolo Courage C60/Peugeot. It's probably the easiest to drive and, with its low fuel consumption and low tire wear, it can do up to 8 laps per stint. Although rated #8 in the Top 12 list, its easy handling and longer stints make it my personal favorite for an easy go of it.
