Quirks and Features

The Bad
  • Field is limited to a maximum of 4 riders.
  • Not all tracks are used in Tourist Trophy Mode > Race Events, and not all bikes are available in Arcade Mode.
  • Gamesave takes up a huge amount (1.5M) of space on a memory card.
  • Changing bikes causes the game to be saved even if Auto-save is off.
The Good
  • The basic concept is very similar to GT3/GT4 and many of the same tracks are used, making the learning curve less steep than for most other motorcycle racing sims.
  • Good response to the PS2 game controller.
  • Includes a nice collection of 134 bikes and 37 tracks.
  • Includes onscreen accelerator/brake gauges (handy for checking the proper working of buttons).
  • No duplicate colors as random prizes. In Challenge Mode, you can choose the color of the bike that you want to win. In Race Events, you're only awarded a bike in a given color once, so there's no need to do the same races over and over again to acquire a particular color.

Bike List

In the list below, Cc is engine displacement (in cubic centimeters), BHP is Brake Horsepower, Kg. is weight (in kilograms), and PWR is Power-to-Weight Ratio.

The Acquire column lists the
events where the bike can be won. N means the Nth event, N.n means the nth race of the Nth event, LGx means all gold medals for license x (N, J, E, or S), and '--' means that the bike can be won in Challenge Mode.

Gameplay

Compared to most of the sims in the Gran Turismo series, gameplay in Tourist Trophy is fairly simple. There are no credits to earn and there are no bikes or upgrades to buy. Also, bikes in any particular color can only be won once, so you'll never end up with unwanted duplicates. Although the absence of credits and buyable items makes this similar to GT Concept and GT4 Prologue, there are plenty of features for much more gameplay.

Starting A New Gamesave
  1. Insert a memory card with enough free space. A TT gamesave requires 1.5M (1500K), so you'll need a memory card that has at least that much free space before starting TT.
  2. Choose a language.
  3. Create Game Data. You'll need to press [OK] on this dialog if you want to be able to do Tourist Trophy mode; otherwise, you'll be limited to Arcade mode.
  4. Type a display name.
  5. Set the rider's height. You can set this to your own height if you want; otherwise, the default height (175 cm.) should be okay.
  6. Set your global options. Before going into Tourist Trophy Mode, check Options and change as desired. You can turn off BGM (BackGround Music) in the Sound section, and change the units in the Units section. To minimize wear 'n' tear on your memory card, you can turn off Auto-save in the Misc section; just remember to save the game before shutting down the PS2.
  7. Exit the Options page. You now have two modes to choose from: Arcade Mode and Tourist Trophy Mode. If you're unfamiliar with the Gran Turismo series, you can use Arcade Mode to learn some of the bikes and tracks. Otherwise, choose Tourist Trophy Mode.
Licenses

There are four licenses that can be acquired in Tourist Trophy Mode: Novice, Junior, Expert, and Super. Although there are no license requirements for Race Events, you'll need licenses for Challenge Mode. Each time you acquire a new license, you become eligible for a new set of challenges.

Challenge Mode

There are 93 bikes (201 if you count the different colors of the same bike) that can be acquired by passing various challenges. Initially, with no licenses yet acquired, you're eligible for the first 8 of them (one of which, the Suzuki Skywave 250 TypeS, is already done). To become eligible for the others, you'll need to acquire the necessary licenses. For game completion percentage, you only need to pass a particular challenge once; i.e., if a bike is available in different colors, you only need to acquire one (not all) of them.

Race Events

The events in Race Events are pretty much like those in Gran Turismo 4, and there are 2 types: Championship and Single Race. The first 4 events are for Street bikes while all others are for Racing bikes. You can win a Championship without necessarily winning all of its races, but they all need to be won eventually for 100% game completion percentage. Winning the TT World Series (event #22) opens a credits video and unlocks the Special Machine Festival event for Suzuka8H bikes.

Time Trial

This is similar to the Time Trial in Arcade Mode except that you use the bike that's currently selected and you're allowed to change its settings. This is ideal for the setup and testing of bikes for Single Race series. Or, just for fun.

Post-Complete

Reaching 100% game completion doesn't necessarily mean that there's nothing left to do. Here are a few suggestions for further gameplay:
