Anyone who has got this far is, of course, a relative “dummy”; it is merely a matter of having missed something somewhere. Also in this section I try to provide for people who are not looking for a comprehensive knowledge of ancient Greek grammar, but wish to check some limited passage of text. Sometimes, for example, one can be confronted with two versions of the same passage and wonder if they can really be translations of the same lines; in such a case one will want to check what the original literally says. The list attached may be of assistance in such an undertaking.

For the notion “morpheme”: not to put too fine a point on it, my dictionary provides the following: “any meaningful linguistic unit, whether word or affix which cannot be divided into smaller meaningful units”; for Greek, not only “affixes” count, but also “infixes” [affixes are attached to the beginning or end of a word, infixes are wedged into the middle of it]. For convenience’s sake I have lumped some morphemes together in the synopsis of verb formation: the extended thematic vowels of the subjunctive have been connected to the following personal ending, as also the optative morphemes (-
ι-/-ιη-) to the personal endings. This connection has been maintained in the list. Morphemes from the middle of words have also been included, and to mark them their bars have been given a slightly darker colour.

What has been done here is to draw up a list, backwards-alphabetically arranged, of all the morphemes set out in the synopses of noun and verb. When trying to determine a given form one looks up as large a chunk of the form as is listed, reading backwards of course. Determining such a form as ἀφικοίμεθα, for instance, one does not look under α, nor θα, –μεθα, or ιμεθα but under οιμεθα. After the morpheme the possibilities are set out according to declension and verbal meaning.

Accents have been disregarded, as the noted morphemes do not always carry the same accent.

No separate mention has been made of adjectival endings: these may be taken as included in the sbs’-endings.

When one is trying to determine a form ending in an apostrophe, one must realise that to complete the form a short vowel must be added (only α, -ε or-ο, never ι or υ!); sometimes there is only one possibility, but occasionally there are more: ἀποδοῖτmay be completed as ἀποδοῖτε or ἀποδοῖτο.

, & are listed under α, η & ω as in the lexica.

The Medio-Passive endings are for brevity’s sake named MP: sometimes they only convey the Middle sense (ao, fu 1 & 2), sometimes they may convey both (du, perf IV), sometimes only Passive (fu 3 & 4).

The Active endings must be taken to include ao IV & V, although these have Passive sense.

+ in a column means that such a possibility cannot be entirely disregarded.

ε-stems means “stems ending in ε-“, etc.

*) in a column refers to an appended list of forms that have an -α- before the ending proper.

Often the contracted verbs are mentioned, abbreviated to
α-, ε- & -ο-ctr., meaning verbs in αω, -εω & -οω; always when they are mentioned, the remark regards the durative forms only. When the verbal endings are preceded by -ου-, see contracted verbs

“thematic” has been abbreviated to th, “athematic” to ath, “Epic etc.” to (Ep), “Ionic” to (Ion)

Notes concerning stems ending in the diverse vowels pertain only to the “root forms” of these stems, i.e. forms that have no phase marker (or thematic vowel) between stem and ending: du I & II, ao I and perf IV. A full enumeration of vowel-stems is appended here:

A-stems: ἀγα-, βα-, γηρα-, δυνα-, ἐρα-, ἐπιστα-, θνα-, ἱστα-, κρα-,  κρεμα-, κτα-, μα-, ὀν(ιν)α-, οὐτα-,  (πιμ)πλα-, (πιμ)πρα-, πρια-, πτα-, στα-, τα-, φα-, φθα-, χρα-;  stems of α-ctr. with vowel or ρ- before the α- (MP perf forms).

E-stems: -, θε-, ἱε-, κιχε-, ῥυε-, σβε-, τιθε-, χαρε-; a very few stems of ε-ctr. (MP perf forms). aor IV&V in some forms look like ε-stems!

(MP perf forms). aor IV&V in some forms as η-stems

I-stems: (δε)δι-, ἰ-, κει-, κλι-, κρι-, φθι-, some verbs in ιω (MP perf forms).

O-stems: ἁλο-, βιο-, βρο-, γνο-, (δι)δο-, ὀνο-, πλο-; πο- (MP perf forms).
