Anyone who has got this far is, of course, a relative “dummy”; it is merely a matter of having missed something somewhere. Also in this section I try to provide for people who are not looking for a comprehensive knowledge of ancient Greek grammar, but wish to check some limited passage of text. Sometimes, for example, one can be confronted with two versions of the same passage and wonder if they can really be translations of the same lines; in such a case one will want to check what the original literally says. The list attached may be of assistance in such an undertaking.
What has been done here is to draw up a list, backwards-alphabetically arranged, of all the morphemes set out in the synopses of noun and verb. When trying to determine a given form one looks up as large a chunk of the form as is listed, reading backwards of course. Determining such a form as ἀφικοίμεθα, for instance, one does not look under –α, nor –θα, –μεθα, or –ιμεθα but under –οιμεθα. After the morpheme the possibilities are set out according to declension and verbal meaning. Accents have been disregarded, as the noted morphemes do not always carry the same accent. No separate mention has been made of adjectival endings: these may be taken as included in the sbs’-endings. When one is trying to determine a form ending in an apostrophe, one must realise that to complete the form a short vowel must be added (only –α, -ε or-ο, never –ι or –υ!); sometimes there is only one possibility, but occasionally there are more: ἀποδοῖτ’ may be completed as ἀποδοῖτε or ἀποδοῖτο.
ᾳ, ῃ & ῳ are listed under α, η & ω as in the lexica. |
The Medio-Passive endings are for brevity’s sake named MP: sometimes they only convey the Middle sense (ao, fu 1 & 2), sometimes they may convey both (du, perf IV), sometimes only Passive (fu 3 & 4).
ε-stems means “stems ending in –ε-“, etc. *) in a column refers to an appended list of forms that have an -α- before the ending proper.
