Times On Hold (eigen beheer) van
de Groninger Robert Wiersma is van een ouderwets soort kwaliteit.
Het is dus helemaal niet zo erg dat we pas maanden en maanden nadat
deze plaat is verschenen met een recensie aan komen zetten Deze cd
kan het hebben, want met de waan van het moment heeft dit allemaal
niets te maken. Robert Wiersma heeft een cd gemaakt, die jaren later
nog net zo genietbaar zal zijn als nu. Times On Hold zou een verloren
opname kunnen zijn van Mickey Newbury
of Michael Nesmith. Net als deze twee
heren roept Wiersma een wereld van isolement op met zijn muziek. In
het geval van Wiersma ook letterlijk, want hij hield alles in eigen
hand. De productie is bijna voorzichtig te noemen, mede daardoor wekt
dit de indruk dat het oude opnamen van eind jaren zestig/begin jaren
zeventig zijn die onder het stof vandaan zijn gehaald. De onnadrukkelijkheid
van dit alles maakt van Robert Wiersma een innemende persoonlijkheid.
Hij brengt een prettig soort melancholie, waarin de vergankelijkheid
der dingen met een glimlach wordt aanvaard. Met alleen zijn licht
rinkelende akoestiche gitaren en een enkele keer wat strepen op de
elektrische gitaar schildert de Groninger een landschap als dat van
zijn provincie. Open en weids. Vooral als hij een tweede stem over
de zang drapeert, doet dit sterk denken aan oude countryrock van het
fijnste soort. Newbury en Nesmith dus, maar ook Gene
Clark, een akoestische Neil Young
en zelfs wat Buffalo Springfield. (John

From the Netherlands, Wiersma has his
eyes and ears firmly set on that melancholy singer/songwriter genre,
perhaps best exemplified by Gene Clark on the “White Light “
album. With only guitar and vocals on show this isn’t by any
means a bad attempt. He sings well and the guitars ripple and swell
creating a sound best listened to in a late night fugue."
