The Nebelung
The Nebelung started with Siegfried (1984) and Brunhilde (1985). The mother Elsa was a black domestic shorthair and the father resembled a Russian Blue. Elsa's father was a longhaired resembling a black angora. In May 1986, Siegfried and Brunhilde's first litter was born and Cora Cobb decided to start a new breed. Cora contacted Dr. Solveig Pflueger, the TICA genetics specialist. Her advice was to describe this new breed as a longhaired Russian Blue. The Nebelung breed standard was written, which was based on the breed standard from a Russian Blue with one difference coat length. However for breeding a healthy Nebelung breed, "fresh" blood was needed preferably from a Russian Blue with longhair recessive. She found people interested in breeding and also people who were willing to mix in Russian Blue cats.
Separate from the American line, rare Russian Blue kittens with longer fur ("Nebelungs") are being born in Russian Blue litters. For Nebelung breeders really an opportunity for creating new blood.For more information follow this link.
Nowadays
there are Nebelung breeders in the USA, Germany, the Netherlands and Russia.
Breeding will start up in Poland, France and the United Kingdom. The
Nebelung is recognized by the TICA, TCA, WCF and some independent cat
societies.
