Corriedale Express.
In 1982 there was a demand for a sheep carrier of a better size than the Merino Express.
Therefore Vroon, in co-operation with two other companies, bought the m.v. Hoegh Pride, a tweendecker
owned by Hoegh Lilles of Norway. This company had the vessel built in Finland at the Wartsila Yards of
Turku in 1970. In 1976 Hoegh had the vessel lengthened with a 25 metre section at the Kawasaki Shipyard
at Kobe. In 1982 Meyerwerft at Papenburg converted this tweendecker into a sheepcarrier with a capacity of
55.000 sheep. In the beginning of 1983 the vessel went to Australia. In April 1987 the ship experienced the
results of the war between Iran and Iraq when she was attacked by an, up till now, not identified men of war,
which fired a great amount of rockets at her. Although the damage was considerable, nobody was hurt. After
being discharged the Corriedale Express went to Singapore for repairs. The repairs being completed she traded
again between Australia and the Middle East.
After the Iran/Iraq war was over she also resumed to trade in the Persian Gulf area. Apart from some trips
out of Montevideo the vessel normally sailed ( and still does) between Australia and Middle Eastern countries.
