Frost Express / Frost Explorer
Frost Express.
During the spring of 1981 shipyard Galena SA of Gijon laid the keel for their building number 268.
The vessel was named Esquimal: the first of a series of eight reefers to be built by various Spanish
shipyards. Even before launching, her name was altered into Frigo Tenerife. At the end of the summer of the
same year the vessel was delivered to her owners, Naviera Transcanaria of Santa Cruz.Early 1986 Seatrade of
Groningen learned that six of these vessels were up for sale.
After a six months initial charter period with an option to buy the vessels it was decided that Seatrade
would take over four of the ships whilst two were to be bought by a company to be nominated by Vroon.
In June 1986 the first of these two vessels was taken over as Frost Express. Because the condition of the
ship was not according to Vroon standards, extensive maintenance was done before she started trading.
At the end of 1988 when Russian owners showed serious interest,
the Frost Express was sold again. The new owners took delivery of the vessel in February 1989.
They named the reefer Etalon whilst her port of registry became Novorosisk.
In 1990 the vesse1 was sold again. The well-known reefer ship company, Laskaridis from Greece became the
new manager. Under her new name of Frio Espana the ship is still trading.
Frost Explorer.
The history of this vessel is similar to her sister-ship, the Frost Express. The keel was laid during
the summer of 1981 and delivery took place at the end of the same year. She was built at the shipyard,
Galena SA of Gijon and her owners were Naviera Transcanaria of Santa Cruz.
The ship started her career as Frigo Las Palmas. In 1985 the vesse1 was sold to a company associated
with Vroon and named Frost Explorer. As with her sister-vessel, the former owners went bankrupt, reason
why they did not spend enough money on maintenance of the vessel, so before starting her new life some
extensive repairs had to be done.In June 1989 the ship was handed over to the Russians, who called
her Eridan, and sold her in 1990 to her present owners. This time also Laskaridis Shipping from Greece became
the manager. Under Cypriot registry the vesse1 is still trading today. Her present name is Frio Brasil.
