Dhammapada
(crossover version)

Freshly recruited infantry man go to boot camp. There they learn how to march, shoot and shout "Yes Sir".

Freshly recruited Buddhist monks go to a monastery. There they learn to meditate and they study a basic Buddhist text called the Dhamapada (the path of the Dhamma, or the path that leads to enlightenment).

Here you find a translation of the first five verses of this dhamapada.

---------- I-1 ----------

All that we are is the result of what we have thought:
it is founded on our thoughts,
it is made up of our thoughts.

If a man acts from an untrue thought,
suffering follows him,
as the wheel follows the beast that draws the cart.

---------- I-2 ----------

All that we are is the result of what we have thought:
it is founded on our thoughts,
it is made up of our thoughts.

If a man acts from an true thought,
happiness follows him,
like a shadow that never leaves him.

---------- I-3 ----------

He abused me,
he beat me,
he defeated me,
he robbed me,

in those who harbour such thoughts
hatred will never cease.

---------- I-4 ----------

He abused me,
he beat me,
he defeated me,
he robbed me,

in those who do not harbour such thoughts
hatred will cease.

---------- I-5 ----------

For hatred does not cease by hatred at any time:
hatred ceases by love,
this is an old rule.

The original Dhammapada was written in Pali -a dead Indian language- in say 300 BC. The above translation is the one available for free from the Gutenberg project.

My translation below is close to this Gutenberg version. Except that I could not resist the temptation to add value. I have added some lines. To mark these lines I have put them between ( and ).

The Dhammapada, the crossover version,
Buddha meets the Stoics.

(Donce).

sola la amia, pote finir la onia.

Thanks to Leon Porter, who pointed out errors in an earlier version. (Against his advice I left in all the la's, it sounds much better that way)
